Tesla doesn’t accept Arizona eTitle transfers for trade ins.

Hey all, just wanted to share an experience to help those about to trade in a car to Tesla for a new car.

Here in Arizona MVD has gone away from issuing paper titles. When you buy a car or pay off a loan, AZ MVD holds the title electronically. You can still request a paper title but they will not automatically send you one. When you buy or sell a car, you and the other party, including dealerships can just transfer ownership and the eTitle through Arizona MVDs new online service.

I mention this because in case anyone is like us and looking to trade in a car to Tesla for a new car, Tesla does not accept eTitle transfers. They insist on a paper title. The only place that is authorized to print the title is AZ MVD and they won’t do it at a third party MVD or the actual brick and mortar MVD. You must submit a request and pay a small $4 fee and they will then mail you one.

In case anyone else is looking for a quick turnaround in their purchase be ready with a paper title and order one now to save yourself some time. MVD said it can take up to two weeks for the title to arrive.

Sorry for the long post. Hope this helps some of you here in AZ or other states with eTitles.
