Tesla’s Battery Day event also delivered specs for the Plaid Powertrain Model S, including a 200 MPH top speed and more than 520 miles of range.
The flagship sedan will pack 1,100 horsepower and travel 0-60 MPH in less than 2 seconds.
Tesla showed off a video of the car racing at Laguna Seca Raceway, hitting a record 1:30.3 second lap. Chief Executive Elon Musk said the company believes it could still shave three extra seconds off the time. The Lucid Air, a highly-anticipated electric sedan planned for 2021, previously held the record with an unconfirmed time of 1:33 seconds.
Tesla posted a video to Twitter of the Plaid Model S’s record day on the track.
The Plaid Model S will also have slightly more aggressive styling with a wider body and sports-car-appropriate features like a spoiler.
Tesla is now offering the Plaid Model S for purchase on its website for $139,490.
