I have been told two different things about my P100DL. One is that eventually the computer will be upgraded and the other was just yesterday when a Tesla salesman told me that there would be no hardware upgrades to any Tesla car after it was shipped. At the same time he was trying to get me to purchase a Model 3 with the weaker computer system installed. I told him that I would wait until I could test a Model 3 with a computer that was capable of Level 4 Autonomy. What is the truth about hardware upgrades?
If you are just talking about the autopilot (AP) computer, in mid 2016 the new platform came out that has an upgradable processor. This new AP2.0 got upgraded to 2.5 last year with a second nVidia processor. One of the nVidia chip designers joined Tesla to build a new processor that might be a magnitude faster since it is designed just to do autopilot. That might be out next year. Likely it will be called 3.0 and all the 2.0 hardware will be upgraded for those who bought autopilot and FSD. Whether the cameras and current sensors can get to level 4 without lidar and more radar is a heated debate. The Model 3 AP hardware is the same as the latest P100D. Even the latest non-AP processors like the MCU (big screen) are just as fast on the 3. Whether owners of pre spring 2018 S/X MCU computers will be able to pay service centers to upgrade to the Model 3 MCU is an equally heated debate.
Sounds confusing and nothing is guaranteed in writing. I better wait until I see a Tesla drive itself before buying any more Teslas.
