Accident occurred Tuesday 4/2/2013 around 6:40am on Laguna Canyon Road between El Toro Road and State Route 73 in Laguna Beach, California. Head on collision between a Honda Accord and a Tesla Model S. The two occupants of the Honda were killed. The lone occupant of the Tesla sustained minor injuries. Head-on collision in Laguna Beach kills 2, closes road - latimes.com There was a third car involved, a Mercedes. "The two cars were supposedly passing the light at El Toro going north where the road has two northbound lanes for a couple hundred feet before the right lane is supposed to merge into the left lane. They took off and it sounds like the Telsa and Mercedes both wanted to not allow each other to merge into the left lane with the Tesla possibly then driving in the center divider area for another few hundred feet before the center divider ends and forced him into the on coming lane." Please help keep this summary up-to-date and accurate as we learn more.
Terrible news. That road always freaked me out when I lives in SoCal (I'm assuming it's Laguna Canyon).
El Toro Road - Google Maps That looks like an odd place for a head on collision. 2 uphill lanes and 1 downhill lane, not curvy.
Very, very sad. My thoughts go to the two who died and the third in the hospital. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. I have to admit to a morbid curiosity in the accident analysis. What happened? How did the Model S fare? How did extrication from a Model S go? While we know the Model S is ostensibly a safe car in theory, it's only by looking at real world accidents can we know for sure.
That's horrible indeed. But sad as it is, it will provide real world crash info. http://ktla.com/2013/04/02/2-killed-in-head-on-crash-in-laguna-beach/#axzz2PJtpaRfx hard to tell
Honda Accord and Model S. Looks like the Model S sheared off part of the car. Prayers to all involved. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-laguna-beach-accident-20130402,0,1363640.story
Both linked stories say the tesla driver veered into the oncoming traffic and is in hospital with minor injuries. From the pictures the Accord was demolished.
That's my thought as well. The report did something I've griped about: called it a Tesla without a model: I'm going to assume an S though since I doubt a Roadster could do this kind of damage:
