I’m glad everyone that has done the MCU2 upgrade is happy with it. But to me, it is not worth it in its present form. Losing the radio is a show stopper for me (and likely many other people).
I have 2 Tesla cars; a classic model S and a model 3 with (not yet available FSD) ability. I have used AP (FSD still being vaporware) and its variants a total of two times, once on my model 3 and once on a model S loaner car. Based on my experience it is not ready for prime time. I’ve had the car try to shift from the lane it was in to an adjacent lane with an 18 wheeler in that adjacent lane, brake for no apparent reason and do other unexpected things. Anyone that thinks they can rely on the system on a highway at 90 mph plus is kidding themselves. If you drive 30 mph you will likely survive an accident when the system screws up. You may even survive an accident at 65 mph in a Tesla when the system screws up. But I’m not willing to trust it at the speeds I typically drive on the highway.
I am not interested in playing games, or watching Netflix. I do neither at home, and have no desire to do so in a car. If Tesla had improved the media player on MCU2 I might consider the upgrade. But it’s essentially the same as on MCU1. I also do not find MCU1 to be laggy. Yes, MCU2 is somewhat faster, but I wonder if part of that is because it is less cluttered with old, extraneous files. If your MCU1 is really laggy, I suggest you do a factory reset. You may be surprised by how responsive MCU1 becomes when all the old stuff in it is deleted. Cell phones and computers slow down over time and doing a clean install on them speeds them up. The same is true with the MCU. In several years you may no longer consider MCU2 to be snappy.
If Tesla ever offers the upgrade with a working radio I’ll do the upgrade. But until that time, I’ll stick with MCU1, which is 7 years old in the model S and has another year on the warranty. If the eMMC fails after the warranty runs out, I’ll get the chip replaced if Tesla doesn’t offer a radio option fir MCU2 at that time.
Everyone has their own preferences and I respect that. To me, having a working radio is more important than all the frivolous games and video apps available on MCU2.
