Just for kicks, I entered my VIN in at VIN Decoder and noticed the 'engine series' on the Model S is 'M6M', and the 'engine type' is 'Tesla M6M motor':

I couldn't find any references to M6M online; any ideas?

AFAIK they have developed and build the motor themselves, in-house, unlikely you will find anything technical online.

I saw an interview with Elon (I can't seem to find it) but he said they went to motor manufacturers and asked if they could design and build a particular type of motor for them. They said "no" so Tesla then designed the motor and went to companies to ask if they can build it and againt were told "no", so Tesla decided to build the motors themselves.
