It may not be about battery tech, but instead, an increased rate of production and capital savings. Tesla — and essentially all other automakers — are dealing with battery cell constraints. While most mainstream articles point to the Tesla / Maxwell acquisition’s worth when it comes to battery tech and energy density, Maxwell’s solvent-free electrode...

The Maxwell dry method uses nanotechnology to apply the coating which not only eliminates messy expensive and volatile/environmentally unfriendly solvents, it also basically reduces the amount of empty space or inert "filler" molecules between the molecules in the final electrode film. The result is a stronger film with higher energy density. As well as being cheaper (estimated 15-20% cost reduction) and easier (up to 16x more throughput) to produce, the new Maxwell formula batteries will be more robust (bonding strength of electrodes up to 76% stronger - (148.8 kpa vs 84.3 kpa for slurry produced electrodes), and the resulting batteries can be charged and discharged faster. This means more power, more range (20% to 100% more range, that's minimum 400 miles for a long range or performance model 3 ), and even faster recharging. And more profit. More about this here Long-Term Fundamentals of Tesla Motors (TSLA)
Bring on the Tesla powertrain investor meeting - it will be huge.

The battery investor day cant come soon enough. In the meantime I will try not to think about it.

This statement makes no sense. The improved battery technology, i.e. DBE process, is what allows increased rate of production and capital savings.

    "Nanotechnology"?

Having seen a cross sectional diagram of the process, it looks like a photocopier. (And yes, I do know about photocopiers)

"Therefore, high-surface-area nanomaterials increase the electrolyte/electrode interface and enhance the Li+ diffusion rate, which result in increased charge/discharge rates" (From Park et al. 2016).

I probably should have said "uses nanotechnology in the coating", as it does look like the conductive films are made using electrostatic processing.
