I've said this before, but I have confirmation from Google Trends. Web searches for "Tesla Model 3" in New York:

Yes, there is more interest in Central New York than there is in Long Island or New York City.

But we don't have a service center. People will not buy the car without a service center within a reasonable (~150 mile) range.

I agree with you. I have spoken with a lot of people since I got my car, July 2015, that would get one if there was a service center closer to Syracuse/Rochester area. Right now the two closest I believe are Mt. Kisco and Montreal, both over 3+ hours away.

I sent a message to Tesla and they responded, they are working on increasing their presence in larger cities, but it takes time and there was no certainty indicated they would select Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo etc.

I couldn't agree more that we need one. I spoke to a service adviser this week and if my car needs service but still drive able... It's $3 a mile each way to truck it to the nearest SC. Warranty covers non-drive able issues. After the 50k mile warranty is up... Then $3/mile regardless of what happens.

It's also a major pain in the butt to drive 4 hours to get a yearly checkup. I guess I could skip it.

So back to the $3 charge....quick back of napkin calculation is $1200 to Cleveland before you begin to incur any service cost. Guess who is selling their Tesla before the warranty expires?

Let's set up a petition of some sort and get signatures to submit it as a group to Tesla. Anyone know how to do this? Because I don't.

Because Tesla needs to commit to Syracuse.

Tesla has only promised another 200 "stores and service centers" *worldwide* in the next two years. With this extremely limited number, they have to attempt maximum geographic coverage with each service center for now.

Syracuse would be a viable location to provide a minimal level of service to serve most of upstate NY with one service center. It is conveniently located at the junction of north-south and east-west Interstates.

* Buffalo is too far west to serve most of the Southern Tier, Central NY, or the North Country. With a Buffalo service center, they still need a Syracuse service center. And because of the national border, Buffalo can't service Canadian cars; it loses half of the "catchment area".
* Rochester is better, but it's still skewed too far west.

Basically it's either Syracuse, or open *three* upstate service centers immediately to get geographic coverage... and still want a service center in Syracuse. ;-)

I am also in the position where when my prepaid unlimited ranger service expires, I will have to sell the car *and buy a car not made by Tesla* unless they have opened a closer service center by then. They should have had a Syracuse service center by last year; it's ridiculous that they haven't committed to opening one yet. (The Syracuse metro area is sprawling, it's not like it commits them to a particular municipality or land deal.)

Not having a semi-close service center is about my biggest concern for my Model 3 reservation. My coworker has a Model S, but he has the unlimited ranger service as well. So for now it's not an issue for him, but he knows it will be a problem.

I was hoping maybe they had something in the works by now, or would give me some kind of hope. Unfortunately they did not.

Here was the reply:

This is Deen from Tesla. At this time we do not plans for a service center in upstate/western New York. Feel free to check in on our website for future service centers, should they become available. : www.tesla.com/findus.

I wouldn't worry too much about that response. Tesla will probably continue giving that response until there is a service center actually operating in Upstate NY, or in the very least, until they have broken ground for one. Tesla tends to play information about service center openings and Supercharger openings pretty close to the vest.

That being said, I have a reservation for a Model 3, but won't be buying it unless Tesla has a service center in Upstate NY open at the time I'd be taking delivery. With all the Model 3 reservations, there is simply no way the current setup is workable, so I am optimistic.

I got my Model 3 Aug 1 and had to go to Mt Kisco to pick it up or I could have gone to Pittsburgh!!! This is crazy. I have written to my State Senator Rich Funke and wrote letters to the editor in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle asking why only 5 Tesla stores in NYS. They give me the ridiculous answer its the law. The reality is its the law to protect the NYS Car Dealers. I will continue to write to Rich Funke to stop inconviencing your constuients and allow Tesla to do business like any auto company.

For reference, Tesla could open a service center in Syracuse tomorrow if they wanted to.

There is a rather stupid legal restriction on *stores*/*delivery* locations in NY, but no restriction on service centers.

Tesla is simply trying to avoid spending money which they need to spend.

Looks like we may be finally getting one:

Central NY town approves breakthrough electric vehicle service center. Is it Tesla?

Also, for those that road trip around Upstate NY. Tesla has updated their Supercharger Find Us map and it now includes the following Upstate locations:

Potsdam: 4 V3 Chargers just opened up at a Stewarts Shop
Verona: 12 V3 Chargers just opened up at Turning Stone Casino
Whitney Point: Target Opening Q1 2023
Tully: Target Opening Q2 2023
Batavia: Target Opening Q2 2023
Parish: Target Opening Q2 2023
Hancock: Target Opening Q1 2023
Rotterdam: Target Opening Q1 2023

I’ll
So i know this old. but i did some digging, This (according to engineering documents) is a Tesla SC. It doesnt have the word tesla on it. But the floorplan shows two vehicles in the showroom. If you zoom into one, it has a T on the hood.......
any idea of when they will open? I drove by there a few weeks ago and it doesn’t look like any renovations to the building have started.
