To be honest, $120k per employee (fully loaded) sounds about right -- possibly even a bit low. That said, the statement regarding "profitability" was in the context of the roadster biz unit. The powertrain unit has already been declared profitable (and likely contains a significant number of the total 300headcount), and the model-S / advance R&D unit is likely not included in the equation.

Still, valleywag has a point. Without the new loans or a significant shift in the economy, Tesla has another round of layoffs in the futue.

Do they send a prelim version of the newsletter to owners / press first, then send a revised version to everyone else later?

I just got my copy and it has been reworded to some degree.

Funny how no one noticed that at the excitement of the Model S release.
Edit: the releases might have been different to the press so that picture might not have been included.

I suppose it would make sense to also embed that picture in the Smart EV thread.

    Government Money

We have a tendency to perhaps short change Elon a little for his brash statements. Yes, it seems to be way out there, but let's don't forget that he has been very successful getting government money to keep Space X flying. He probably knows something about the loan that we don't.

Now this is the part where he is walking on the edge of the cliff. We've had bad news about the new pricing structure, and read the negative press that touched off. Orders are being cancelled or revised and generally the news and the mood has been a bit depressing.

Tesla really needs a shot in the arm and this bit of positive news is just what everyone needs right now. Someone has to be positive and be the bearer of some good news. In small start up companies and heading out for new adventures you have to keep a very positive and outgoing message or people will give up on you.

Yes, he is walking on the edge of a cliff and it is a risk where you don't know which side you're standing on. Hopefully, he has it right. Thinking about it though, if I were in his situation, I would probably do the same thing.
