totally off-grid solution with big enough solar panel area, battery storage etc are still extremely expensive. It is easily $100k + for a typical size home. Solar/battery system that is connect to grid will be the only feasible solution for many many years to come.

Agreed, the realistic goal is reducing reliance on the grid, not going off-grid.... just yet.

As more Teslas get wrecked, ideally with just enough damage to the battery pack to obviate immediate reuse, a market for the individual battery modules will develop. Scrapyards and insurance adjusters/auctions need to be advised how to safely disconnect batteries and quickly get these to this special market. A defacto market already exists but this needs to take a more public and universal form.

With such a market of Li-Ion modules existing, DIY off-grid installations will now have a reasonably low cost alternative to Tesla's Powerwall offerings. Competition from below, as it were.
