Tesla open up the SuC network [in UK]

For governments there is in many cases a magic money tree, in that investment promotes growth which raises GDP and increases tax revenues. Equally a government 'saving' money can end up losing more in the long run. Getting that balance right seems to be beyond most governments though.
We continue to provide billions in subsidies to fossil fuel companies every year. Collectively, the EU has provided over $2 trillion in fossil fuel subsidies over this decade.

But a sensible policy to ensure more chargers and reliable chargers would leave it to the market to sort it out.

Possibly, but all the evidence available right now today then suggests that like everything else that is left to the market they’ll be unaffordable to a significant minority (which gets ever bigger and may soon be, if it’s not actually already, a majority).

Money has to come from somewhere, we chuck ours away on *sugar* IT systems for the NHS that don’t work or badly designed cycle lanes etc etc. We’d be better off paying tax to Musk than any UK government in history, he’d put it to much better use lol
How many billions have been spent on quantitive easing? On propping up mismanaged banks? And how many financial reliefs have gone the way of the fossil fuel industry for decades… and now they have so much profit from spiralling prices that even Conservatives are looking at windfall taxes! It’s amazing how money can be found when you want to.

Years ago there was one specific SC site that got built but couldn't be powered because some I*♡T land owner refused to lease their land to Tesla to run the power cables needed.

One 'talking to' by the right people in power or simply a wedge of fake cash(lets face it, all money is pretty much fake these days) and it would have been sorted.

The ONLY soution to queuing at SC sites is more SC. Imagine if Boris (or one of his mates) was in a Tesla and ended up been late to an official government pi** up (payed for by our taxes). How quickly do we think legislation and money would be found, and the barriers to SC installs removed??

Our government needs to do something, anything. So the fact Tesla is even been mentioned by a government minster is a good thing, you need to at the table first before been able to influence anything.

yes we need investment - thats not the same as subsidy. I don’t expect significant subsidy for fitting of chargers. I expect (already announced) investment in power infrastructure to deliver power to some of the right locations to facilicate larger charging hubs.

Gridserve, Tesla, instavolt, MFG, Fastned etc are all ready and likely to put their own private investment into the chargers if that happens

Well the timetable for the £950m rapid charging fund now has some milestones. Pathfinder site(s) winter 2022. All Motorway Services Areas to have 6 ultra rapids by end of 2023 (cough).

“The Rapid Charging Fund provides a pivotal opportunity to open up the market at motorway service areas as well as increase charging infrastructure available to drivers. The upgraded connections will only be
open to chargepoint operators with open networks that are interoperable with all EVs.” Page 60. https://assets.publishing.service.g...-electric-vehicle-infrastructure-strategy.pdf

Tesla want new MSA connections = open your network….(for the new sites at least).

With the UK’s infrastructure still being sold off to foreign investors only interested in turning profits for themselves whilst saddling the utility with debt, think new National Grid investor Macquarie and their previous time with Thames Water, the chances of any target or investment or indeed anything regarding EV infrastructure emanating from the mouths of this government being met are probably net zero.

We don’t actually have a national infrastructure, we have an assortment of probably foreign owned private companies who’s own interests are not aligned with what would actually be in the best interests of the nation.

There’s nothing like setting your sights high… and this is nothing like setting your sights high! (20+ is more like it)

The issue of landowners who own a strip of ground that needs to have a cable layer across is the kind of thing that government can surely deal with. People should not be able to hold the system to ransom.

They should also be ensuring that all opportunities to increase the number of chargers are taken. Even with access to Tesla chargers presently restricted to one brand they take pressure off the other adjacent public chargers. There’s no point looking a gift horse in the mouth. Let’s allow as many chargers to be installed as the network can take.

I saw a program years ago about why the railways were so antiquated in UK compared to mainland Europe. In a 10yr period the UK had built 1 viaduct, France built 10, the difference was procurement of land. UK ask the landowner how much they want for the land, France they tell the landowner how much he’s getting. I don’t think much has changed. In essence greedy landowners stop development of infrastructure here, whereas government forces development there🤷🏼‍♂️

I’d have thought that when a non-Tesla EV is added to a Tesla account, Tesla will recognise the make and model from the reg. number and be able to determine and report straight away what SuC site limitations apply to that vehicle.
The charger itself should be able to identify the vehicle and if it’s in an inappropriate location refuse to charge it.

Wayleaves aren’t impossible. Bread and butter for a DNO. They can take time & money.

“7. Can I oppose the grant of a new necessary wayleave?

If the landowner opposes the grant of a necessary wayleave then a necessary wayleave hearing will normally take place before an inspector who will then produce a report and finally the Secretary of State will make a decision as to whether or not it is necessary and expedient for a necessary wayleave to be granted.”

10. How is the amount of compensation assessed?

The landowner is entitled to recover all the loss which reasonably flows from the grant of the wayleave. In the case of development sites, complicated arguments then arise as to the proper qualifications of that loss and the correct valuation date. It is therefore essential that you instruct a specialist solicitor with experience in this field to advise you in relation to the correct legal principles and the best arguments to deploy to ensure that you maximise the compensation payable. In our experience electricity companies often make derisory offers and are very reluctant to properly compensate landowners for their true loss. In order to combat their approach and maximise the compensation due you must instruct a specialist solicitor!”

if they can get the cables and capacity fitted to support that number of chargers, I see no issue with them hitting that target. Gridserve/tesla/MFG/instavolt etc should have the capacity to expand the local installs if the legwork by the DNOs is done. They’re already rolling out chargers in locations with power pretty quickly

Not every Tesla owner bought one because of the SuC network alone.
Opening up the SuCs to other cars will not affect the demand for Tesla products. Demand will outstrip supply for some time and even if Model 3 or Y sales were to fall, that would allow batteries to be diverted to other products waiting to be manufactured.

There have been virtually no issues in NL or other countries where the SuC network has been opened up. It seems to have been managed well and Tesla have already said they will do the same if and when the UK follows suit.

Also, one comment from a junior minister counts for very little in my book. It could still be many months before anything changes here and when it does I expect it will have very little impact on Tesla owners.
