I saw your post on RFD; you sure can ask the Calgary Store to mount the rims for you. The staff I've dealt with in the Calgary store are very friendly and do their best to accommodate customers. Oh, and due to the extreme cold snap, energy consumption will be much higher so do charge as much as possible before embarking long journeys. Welcome to the club.

They are friendly, but I ask two salespeople and the delivery specialist and they all said the same thing. Maybe they can throw me a bone when I go to pick up tomorrow if I nudge them a bit.

Agreed. I hear people whine on TMC about the service centers and it always strikes me as weird. I have never had anything except positive interactions. Great team. I could not be happier.

Hello to all Tesla Owners of Alberta.

We are a recent addition to the local vendors group with TMC and after reading through the Alberta Tesla thread, I thought it important to introduce ourselves.

There has been some discussion regarding PPF and ceramic coatings in the Calgary/Edmonton area and I wanted to inform everyone that We offer ongoing promotional pricing for all of our Tesla owners. We specialize in Tesla's and have significant experience in full vehicle wraps with Xpel with great results. Let us know what you need and we will gladly assist in building the right package. We are located in Calgary and we also offer trailer service in our modern 26' enclosed trailer. We recently delivered a brand new model 3 to Edmonton after a full wrap and ceramic package installed at delivery of the vehicle.

Couple questions that I hope you guys have more experience with than other Tesla owners:
  1. How are the windshields holding up with all the Alberta gravel? For people that got something like the ExoShield window film, how has that held up with all the salt/mud/rocks?
  2. In Calgary is getting repairs for an M3 a less than pleasant experience like it is in some areas of the US? For example waiting weeks for parts and/or not getting a loaner
  3. How bad was the -30 cold snap a couple weeks ago? I know for and X/S people were seeing a drop of ~50% in range but I was wondering was the M3 any better/worse
Thank you for any help!

I've only had my Model 3 since September last year but will help give some insight.

Same as any other vehicle so far. I get rock chips and just get them fixed as quickly as possible. I haven't had to get a new windshield yet thankfully but they are expensive since there is no aftermarket glass for Model 3... they can only replace it with Tesla glass (at least that's how it was explained to me by my glass place that I trust). I just made sure to have glass coverage with my insurance. I haven't tried ExoSheild before.

I did cover the front of the car in PPF though and that's held up pretty well. I think I have one rock on the front bumper which may have torn it a bit already though.

I've had two visits for small warranty issues. Booking through the App was amazing and team there would text back and forth asking questions so they had everything ready parts-wise. I only went twice because I asked about the second issue while I was there already and they didn't have parts. They said to make sure to ask all your questions before hand so they can be ready for you.

On the first visit I was given a loaner, the second visit I just waited since they said it would only take 30 minutes and took less than 20.

So all in all, a very pleasant experience so far but I haven't had to visit there that much yet. And thankfully, with how little maintenance is needed that I can't do I should have to.

Best car yet since it's always warm inside and warms up really really quickly. Went from -9 inside to +15 in minutes. Range takes a big hit for sure but just drove Calgary - Lake Louise and used ABRP and it estimated the range very well and I was completely comfortable. There are still some places which would be slow to get to in the winter due to the range and superchargers lacking a bit going south but ABRP and Plug Share have that well covered.

For the most part it's just getting use to the new normal. You worry at first about range and plan it all out but as you begin to get to know the car, range, energy read outs and tools like ABRP you can just trust them and go. Plus, staying some where like Chateau Lake Louise and waking up fully recharged and can drive home is pretty awesome since there are no extra stops then.

Thanks for the very thorough reply! I've been pretty lucky with my current windshield by fixing the rock hits asap, but at ~$900 to replace vs $350 for my current car I am trying to see what's the most 'economical' option.

That's great to hear that they either address it quickly or give you a loaner. I would be getting rid of my ICE car and would only have the one vehicle so having a loaner for longer repairs is critical.

Most of my driving is within Calgary and under 100 km a day, so the use case I'm trying to understand is the occasional ski trip where it's -20.

That being said I am looking forward to having the car be nice and toasty without having to run an engine for 30 minutes and use a liter of gas :p

Ya, getting the chips fixed quickly is the most economical option... followed by insurance coverage on the glass as a backup.

I'd heard a lot stories of loaners or Uber credits but the team in Calgary was awesome when I called on them. Was really happy - much better than my experience for past vehicles.

Driving in Calgary and less than 100km is no concern. Especially since when you walk out to car each more it's already "full" and you don't need to stop for gas when you're already running late.

Ski trips I really don't see being an issue for Sunshine/Lake Louise or any of the most western hills. Superchargers out that way are great. Fernie or south is a little more tricky I think so staying somewhere with a place to charge would be ideal. Again, Plug Share is your friend here. You can even go to a ABRP planner today, plug in a few spots and see what it calculates. I did that before I bought the car just to better understand the ramifications of range for some of the places we travel to outside of the supercharger network.

Also, the supercharge network is constantly expanding so it's only going to get easier.

Two winters and 45K km in and I'll say it's an amazing winter vehicle.

Windshield: I've had and repaired a few big hits. These were big rocks that I saw flying towards my windshield and sounded like a gun going off inside my car when they hit. Repaired with usual chip repair. They're still visible but haven't spread. I am starting to notice my windshield is starting to get pitted - just like every other car I've ever owned. It's par for the course on Alberta highways and gravel roads.

Calgary service: my one experience was excellent - had to replace a defective door handle. It was right when they made the change to booking service from within the app - they said the mobile ranger would have come to fix it, but they didn't have all the bugs worked out with that yet. They looked after me great and fixed it while I waited. I also once used the mobile ranger. Came to my office, picked up my key card at the front desk, did the warranty repair and dropped off the key card. Best service ever!

Driving in cold: warms up real fast. Lose a fair bit of range when doing multiple stops in town, but there's enough range it's not a problem. Much better on the highway. Last winter did road trip from Edmonton to Sun Peaks (1000km each way) with roof box on in -28C. Only issue was slow Supercharging with a cold battery. They released an update this past summer that has fixed that issue. Now long road trips in winter are great.

1) Before getting the Model 3, ,on average I replaced 1 windshield per year. I've put up over 65k after 18 months and there are a few chips including a couple huge hits. I went to the chip repair ASAP and so far all the chips haven't spread. I did ask for a quote and it will cost about $1k for windshield replacement.

2) I had a faulty heater so there was no heat coming out. They had to ship the parts from Fremont. Overall it took around 4-5 days and I had a Model S loaner for the whole time.

3) In -30, figure a 40-50 percent reduction in range but not a problem for daily commute. In fact the car performed great as you could pre-heat the car so by the time you are about to leave, the car is warm and ready for you.

That is terrible. Is it okay to ask if they were in a Tesla vehicle at the time?

As an apartment dweller, things can be tricky especially in colder weather. I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow a friend's garage for the -30 snap and didn't have to drive anywhere that week (would have been really inconvenient for him if I had to get him to let me in to get my car several times lol). If you have a garage where you plug in to Level 2 power every night, you've got nothing to worry about. Even just starting out warm is huge because then you're not warming the interior AND the battery.

For my driving habits, long range has been crucial. Some people (cough Electrek cough) think range isn't an issue. I'll take all I can get, thank you, and standard range wouldn't have cut it in several situations this winter. So if you want to do a longer trek in the winter, or not have to stop at a Level 2 EVSE in the cold and wait a while, consider LR over SR for sure.

Quite disappointed with Tesla service lately. Needed something as simple as new wiper blades for the Model X and could not even talk to anyone to order them. There is not response to the iPhone Tesla appointment scheduler. Had some minor warranty work and no reply to confirm if it required a 3 hour trip to Calgary. Unfortunately had to give the recent TESLA survey poor marks on service.
Does anyone know if Alberta still has a TESLA service ranger ?

I hope there’s still a service ranger. They’re scheduled to fix the dead windshield washer sprayer on my car on Friday afternoon.

In the past I was serviced by a ranger from Edmonton. This time it sounds like I’m being serviced by a ranger from Calgary that will stop by my place on their way back to Calgary from a service trip to Edmonton. I’m not a fan of not having a ranger in Edmonton. I’m not sure what the issue there is. Maybe the Edmonton ranger is too busy to come out to do all the work and rangers from Calgary are coming up to help, or maybe there’s no longer a ranger in Edmonton.

The communication has been ok, not as rapid as I’d hope but they do reply within a few days to my questions.
