Tesla promised to take 2 cars in trade...now 10 days before delivery refuses!

When I placed my order the salesperson agreed that they would accept both of my cars in trade. He even checked in with manager to verify. Now, 10 days before scheduled delivery, Tesla is saying that they won't do this. They said they changed their policy and although they noted that this was the policy when I ordered but they simply changed it. I explained that this makes a difference of >$3000 for me in sales tax (tax that I have already paid on the car the second car that I plan to trade). That is a big difference. My "inside delivery specialist" (the fourth different one that has contacted my since ordering) was not at all helpful and didn't seem bothered by the fact that they agreed to one thing and now just before delivery are not honoring that agreement. Any suggestions as to how to escalate this?

No, but this was verbally agreed on and verified with management at the time of ordering that it would be NO problem. In addition I discussed it again with the salesperson and with someone on the phone at Tesla prior to today because the system would not let me upload info on two cars. They both assured me that it would no problem and that I just needed to discuss with the delivery manager. (Again the fourth different delivery manager that contacted me...all of them had different delivery dates but that's a separate issue.)

Your username implies that you may live in Maryland. If that's the case, then you are likely to get about a $3000 rebate on the excise tax (assuming your car's price is at or below $60k). It doesn't fix the issue with Tesla, but it may reduce it's impact. Just a thought.

No, not in MD. Expecting $1750 from PA though. It is just not right that this was clearly discussed and verified before deposit placed. There wasn't even any hesitation or doubt from Tesla Cherry Hill, the said unequivocally that they would process both trades and that both would go toward purchase and reduce sales tax. Again, my "inside delivery advisor" stated that this was, in fact, the policy when I placed my order but that they just changed the policy and will not honor their verbal agreement.

Where's the proof? Sorry for being harsh, but that's what Tesla is going to ask for

not paying $3600 in sales tax? -- the math isn't adding up for me. How is that possible? How much are your 2 cars worth?

Not sure how much sales tax is where OP lives...but for me it’s 8.625%. So would be about 42K.
I think he would be better off selling privately...and would most probably get even more than 3600 above what tesla would offer. I was able to make 5K more selling my BMW privately than what Tesla was offering, which is WELL more than any tax savings i would have received doing a trade in.

But to answer the original question. Other than calling main sales at Tesla....or speaking with the manager at the service center you will be picking up at....not sure who else you could escalate to.

I asked about two trade in vehicles about 3 weeks before I took delivery. The delivery specialist said yes, but a day later came back and said one would be a trade in, the other would have to be a check that would be mailed and not credited against the vehicle.

They gave me a fair price for both vehicles, but the Tesla system was definitely not set up to handle a second car, the website was never updated to reflect both cars, and it was only delivery day when I got a full accounting of the transaction. I'm actually still expecting that check in about a week based on the timing they told me from the actual delivery.

If you can sell the cars without difficulty, sell them, pocket the extra cash a private sale will generate vs a vis a trade in, and apply the profits to pay the tax. You should come out dollars ahead this way,
.
That, and OP can still sell one of his cars to Tesla if he wants to. He has not posted the arithmetic but I suspect that $58k is the total price of the Tesla, not the net cost that will incur sales tax after trade-in of one car.

Moral of this story: get promises in writing.

This situation sucks but it won't honor the verbal agreement, there's not much that can be done besides trying to escalate.

As others alluded to, trade in the more expensive car and sell the other. If the total was $58k and we use hypothetical $33k (trade-in) and $25k (private sale) values, the $25k times the tax is the "extra" tax that you would be paying which should be much less than the ~3k.
