I see they conveniently left out the part where it nags him every 10 seconds to place his hands back on the wheel even after mission control told him to take his hands off.

There were many technologies in the 50's that were equivalent to or ahead of what we have today.
Cell phone's (as well as Time Travel) were all perfected. The Big Boy corporations squashed these
because they did not yet control the air waves or infra structure of same thus could not monetize.

They also realized best to release tech in increments so they could fleece the public.
