Tesla purchasing GM Oshawa plant for pennies on the dollar

Unless Tesla starts manufacturing complete vehicles at Gigafactory 1, Tesla needs more factories in North America for new products like Model Y, Semi, Pickup, and Roadster 2020. The argument for or against locating it in Canada is a separate issue.
Tesla's plan is for multiple gigafactories but the next one will likely be in Nevada again, and the one after that will be in China. Then Europe.

Click bait title is lame.

Doug Ford loathes anything green and has a particular hate for Tesla.
Your liberal voter card is showing. Think productively, not along party lines. You going to call him a fascist or a Nazi next? That's the usual playbook.

I would argue that Doug Ford hates billions in defecits and debts, and when he was elected, voters were clear - fix our finances.

Cutting back multiple sources of revenues (taxes on his rich buddies) and looking for efficiencies (cutting social programs) is hardly the best way to lift up the economy and fix finances. The minimal income programs of the 70's in Alberta worked. The data is the program created more skilled workers who in turn contribute more taxes to the system than if they were left to be low wage income earners. We're regressing as a province all thanks to the PCs. Once again, they should be realistic and call themselves the Regressive Conservatives.

Everyone including Electrek are jumping the gun.

He was asked a question if he would interested in buying some GM plants that are closing? He kind of gave a weak, ‘yes we can consider’ instead of an emphatic No or Yes.

That’s is what anyone who has not given any consideration would say.

I wouldn't say that. I'm sure her asking wasn't the first time the thought passed through elon's head. His response really means "well that depends how desperate they are to offload it on me so they can cover their liabilities."

Tax cuts for his rich buddies? Lol.

Rich guys like you and your fancy tesla?

The hypocrisy is incredible. Being turbo political is so lame.

Hopefully that gm plant is used for something. But the 2500 jobs lost are going to see 700-800 high paying technical and engineering jobs in Markham for gm. About half the 2500 guys at the factory are pension eligible so they'll be fine. None of this is discussed in the press. Because lame political slant.

More than it ever could. Canadian auto plants exist now only because they can sell into the US. No Gigafactory nearby either so batteries would need to be transported across the country. Steel tariffs which also haven't been removed yet make this even less likely.

There will never be another Fremont factory without battery production. If Tesla bought a used GM plant, regardless of location, it would produce vehicles AND batteries.

I'm an American and believe in everything American; I have never purchased a foreign car. That said, there might be benefits for Tesla and Canada if a complete factory is established in Canada. Canada could possibly be able to provide cheaper materials and possibly lower imports tariffs in deals from the countries that hate the US (just because!) The biggest issue would be the Canadian unions.

Canadian unions are the same as US unions.

Canadian unions are the same as US unions.

The unions may be the same, but the laws are significantly different

Many US States have right to work laws which significantly weaken unions' leverage. Canada has none of that
Canadian labour (yes, labour in Canada LOL) laws favour unionization and make it nearly impossible to de-certify. This gives Canadian unions significantly more power - and often scare away potential employers from setting up factories or expanding.

Depends on the union. Some are stronger than others. CAW > Steelworkers as example.
