I wish Tesla stop this referral program. It brings out the worst in people. Wasn't Tesla's unique selling point a clean buying experience? Isn't the referral program going against that very principle? I'm happy to answer questions regarding the car, with or without the program and it's rewards. I am sure many others are too.
When in school and we had those candy drives, I used to suck at them. My parents would buy the minimum stock I needed to sell to get them off my back.
I am capable of talking up something I believe in and I do believe in Tesla. All my friends are jealous, but only one has enough money to afford an S or X and he thinks they are too big for him. He is interested in the Model 3 or Roadster. Many of my friends are watching the Model 3 with interest to see what will happen. Maybe if there is an incentive program on the M3 by the time they bite, I might get something, but I just don't have many friends wealthy enough to afford Tesla's current offerings.
Those with some kind of web presence like
@islandbayy or Bjorn get enough traffic on YouTube to get a fair number of referrals. Those who are just pitching them in this thread probably aren't getting many because most of the people reading already have a Tesla and if they don't they probably have someone they know personally who will they will talk to when they do buy.
I know enough about the technology in the car to probably put most people to sleep (though some people like wk057 far surpass my knowledge) and I'm happy to answer questions. I weigh in here on TMC whenever I do have some technical nugget to contribute. But I'm not a sales guy. I've had zero referrals this year and I've accepted I'm not getting any. It's the way these things go. The people who know how to market themselves get the sales and that isn't my strength and I haven't had time or energy the last year to put much effort into the small web presence I tried to create with my blog (the last 18 months have been nuts).
I have a mixed feeling about the incentive program. I think it's a good thing to sell the car by word of mouth. Most Tesla owners are ecstatic about their cars and that helps sell them to those who can afford them. I also think those who give some kind of value to the world like making informative videos or other information out there deserve the referrals they get. They are in a sense getting paid for their work putting the information out there.
On the other hand those who have spammed key words on Google and other spam techniques have muddied reputation of the program. Tesla tried to crack down on it, but it's something very hard to police.
Like anything, there have been abuses to the program and that's sad, but there always will be. As soon as someone figured out how to spam on the internet, it became a problem in a very short time.
