Tesla removes small/medium/large solar panel configurations, now offers 8 sizes

As of this morning, it appears that Tesla has removed the size names and replaced them with 8 size offerings, ranging from 4.08 kW to 18.36 kW:

I think this is probably for the best, since a lot of people seemed confused by the set list of 4 sizes before.

EDIT: Looks like they may be A/B testing this, as not everyone is seeing the same sizes.

Interesting - looks like they set it up to go in 6-panel increments instead of 12.... Though when I went to price, I did not see the new options, just the 4 old ones (but no longer labeled small, medium, large, XL.)

EDIT: These prices include $1000 MA solar tax credit. Pricing is unchanged but adds new sizing.

I don't see the updated sizing or prices yet, but this reddit comment seems to have the new prices https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotor...ls_now_in_8_different_configurations/gfxhhne/

Code:
 4.08 kW $5,396 $1.32/W (old $6,396 $1.57/W)
 6.12 kW $8,594 $1.40/W
 8.16 kW $11,792 $1.44/W (old $12,792 $1.57/W)
10.2 kW $14,990 $1.47/W
12.24 kW $18,188 $1.49/W (old $19,188 $1.57/W)
14.28 kW $21,386 $1.50/W
16.32 kW $24,584 $1.51/W (old $25,584 $1.57/W)
18.36 kW $27,782 $1.51/W

Looks like they reduced the prices by $1000 to adjust for tax credit dropping from 26% to 22%. $1.32/W for the smallest is quite the deal!

I am not seeing any price change - and, looking at the linked reddit thread, I am wondering if this is potentially including some extra, local incentives. I am seeing the same base prices ($8,200 for 4.08 kW, multiplied appropriately) as before, and I would be surprised if Tesla was making the smaller systems cheaper than the larger.

As an aside, I see all 8 options looking at Tesla's website from my phone, but only 4 on a desktop browser, which is odd. (But pricing is the same for the options I see.)

I only see four options in both desktop and mobile. Also, it appears their calculations are off since the Self-powered percentage only shows two different values.

Probably a better sales point. Gives people a figure to work with instead of them having to order a smaller or larger size system and then having to go through their advisor to see if it can be increased or decreased and the whole contract then revised. Saves time for everyone consumer and TE and avoids the uncertainty of potential customers wondering if they can order from TE or not.

We might have gone with the 18 panel option instead of the smallest 12 if it were available last year. Although the 6 additional panels would all be north facing (so 24 panel option would be oversized and all 12 additional panels north facing).

Here's a historical summary of $/W prices including federal tax credit (where December price updates assume next year's tax credit rate):
Code:
Date 12panel 24p 36p 48p notes
Sep 2019 $1.86 $1.86 $1.86 (no XL, 315W/panel)
Dec 2019 $2.06 $1.86 $1.83 $1.77
Mar 2020 $1.96 $1.76 $1.73 $1.69
Jun 2020 $1.81 $1.45 $1.42 $1.36 (switch to 340W/panel)
Jul 2020 $1.49 $1.49 $1.49 $1.49
Dec 2020 $1.57 $1.57 $1.57 $1.57 (adds 6panel increment)

I was able to recreate the screenshot by connecting to a VPN server (in Buffalo, NY) and putting in the solar address as "MA-9, Boston, MA, USA" and a monthly bill of $130.

Here's the prices with the incentives hidden:

  1. 4.08 kW: $8,200
  2. 6.12 kW: $12,300
  3. 8.16 kW: $16,400
  4. 10.2 kW: $20,500
  5. 12.24 kW: $24,600
  6. 14.28 kW: $28,700
  7. 16.32 kW: $32,800
  8. 18.36 kW: $36,900
So pricing seems unchanged per Wh.

Did you happen to also notice the bug for the Self-Powered percentage? No matter what I would click on, I only saw 23% (smallest system) or 46% (any other size system).

My 8.16KW + 3 PWs system price was $36,900 before taxes. The same system now is coming up at $39,900. Looks like the PWs went up $1000 each but no discount for solar now vs when I ordered in July. Plus the incentive dropping to 22% would cost me another $1600. Total difference between me ordering now vs when I did is $4600 more expensive now. I wouldn't do it over again at today's prices.

Oh, and add the additional sales tax to $3000 more for PWs, and it's more like $4900 more than when I originally ordered it.

Indeed. I would have chosen 10KW over 8KW. 12KW would have resulted in too much overproduction wholesaling for me.

I have 14.5K, and will see if I wish I have gone larger. I have a big house so heating and cooling is not cheap. Since I have not seen a year of data yet, am not sure how this is going to work out. I would love to have the issue I have too much, since this means I would just get the house warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer. Right now I have decided to set 5 of my 10 mini splits to 64 degrees. I hit 53Kwh the other days since basically had no solar with the rain. Christmas lights take a lot of power. Seems I should have lots to spare, but next data point will be in a few days with another monthly PGE bill.

Looks like the speed of electrons and info at Tesla is very slow. ;):)
Needs a 21st century server. :D

Looks like the price is exactly the same.

Size of a system in W / 340 (per panel) = number of panels

Each panel is $683.33 That's exactly same as before. Don't put the federal tax credit in the calculation. Do that after.
