Tesla has released a time-lapsed video offering a look at production at Giga Shanghai.

The video was posted to the Tesla China Weibo account, saying “Production, assembly, quality inspection, waiting for delivery. The rhythm is orderly step on the point, one word: Steady!”

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has long touted the company’s focus on factories. Musk said in 2016 that the company’s Fremont aimed to be an “alien dreadnought” or the “machine that builds the machine.” The video of Giga Shanghai shows an incredible amount of automation in building the Model 3.

Giga Shanghai has been an impressive accomplishment for Tesla, going from an empty field to a factory building cars in about a year. The factory opened late last year and began delivering vehicles in January.

Giga Shanghai has reached a production rate of about 200,000 vehicles a year. The factory is also currently being expanded to also build the Model Y crossover SUV.

Tesla is currently building two new factories in Berlin, Germany and Austin, Texas.

I was in Fremont last August (2019) and toured the factory. At the time, the Model Y line was just going in and 3 lines for the Model 3 we’re going gangbusters. The S and X’s were in one combined line at that time.

Shanghai Giga looks even cleaner, more compact, and more roboticized. I saw no room (cart lanes) for any factory tour to take place, and the overall look is far more modern. Of course, the camera shots may have been chosen to give that effect.

Berlin will be even better.
