Tesla Solar and Powerwall Price Increase, May 2022

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I notice in May 2022, Tesla has recently increased prices for their solar panels by 3% and increased the cost to install Powerwalls by $500.

Tesla used to offer 4 standard sizes for solar (12X solar panel increments) and now show 10 options (12 solar panel base + 6X solar panel increments). Historically adjustments to the final number of solar panels can be made after the initial order.

See breakdown below. Note, the sub-items for Powerwall are my estimated breakdown; NOT Tesla's actual breakdown. It helps to shows how the cost breaks out. Tesla does state pricing, "Excluding sales tax and including installation".

Current Pricing

I just went back and looked at my contract from Summer 2018..... my cost for TWO (2) PW's, gateway, permits, and installation was $14,458.75.

My 6.6kw PV, part of the same contract, was $25,350 all in.

Seemed insanely expensive/over-priced at the time. I guess not. Glad we didn't wait.

Pricing did increase in September 2022. Cost went up for Powerwall by $500 each and $500 each for the Gateway. The PW install cost was adjusted (overall upward) and the solar + PW combo credit is back. Overall PW only prices are up.

I paid $16,400 for an 8.16 kW system in march of 2021. I could get a 7.2 kW system today for $16,704, which equates to a cost of $18,931 for an equal sized 8.16 kW system. In short, their solar panel costs have increased 15.4% over the last 18 months (still one of the best values out there).

Mid 2020 was the best price for Tesla solar panels. For your size, it was only $400 mor than the low. For bigger systems in 2020 the unit cost rate was great!

Interesting.... I have signed contract with tesla from Oct 2021
8.5KWh + 1 PW = 30k

System not installed yet, due to my procrastination and life obstacles ;) Wanted even to cancel it, but now, seems like a good deal LOL

PS. now 9.6kw +1PW costs 35.7k. Roughly +20% increase over 1 year

Was Tesla still doing micro-inverters with this pricing? I'm guessing no with that Inverter Line item. Comparing the two quotes, it seems like installation cost is now increased by a LOT more.

I agree that with tax credits, prices are much much nicer. I compared with my general cost and it's not that much more actually so feel pretty good with what I paid. If I actually receive my SGIP, only a few K different and my install was probably a bigger pain.

Tesla never did micro inverters. They did power conditioners for a time but never did micros.

In Jan 2020 I had (2) powerwalls added to my existing solar, through tesla. The "All in" cost, including the powerwalls, installation, taxes, permitting (what the proverbial check needed to be written for) was 18,234.XX.

The powerwalls themselves were 6.5k each, , 2.5k in installation, and taxes. No SGIP available from tesla during that install, but when I got 2 other quotes from solar installers, they were quoting me "12k per powerwall" so 24k, and no guarantee of getting any SGIP (but the rep was pushing hard that "the contract says that there is no guarantee of it, but we will be able to get it for you".

Im sorry, but if the contract you want me to sign says "no guarantees of this additional money from SGIP program" then that is what I am going on as far as comparing costs.

That 18k number is what I wrote the check for, then I got 4% back from tesla because they narrowly missed the pre planned installation date for me to get the 30% tax credit (it took a while but tesla actually sent me a check for that). I also got 26% tax credit back on my taxes. I wish I had bought 3 powerwalls now, since mine are in my garage, on the wall next to my car, with no bollards and that doesnt seem to be possible anymore.

Just revisited design & layout. Small surprise, Solar system power is 8.8KW & 22 panels (ordered 8.5KW). Which means, same panels as for nowadays 9.6KW (but 24 panels). For the same price....

If you buy 4 powerwalls the price is still comparable to 2021 after 30% tax credit

No it isn't.

My 3 powerwalls + Gateway were $20,500 installed (install fee waived by combining with solar).
Current price is $29,550 for 3 powerwalls.

4 powewralls would have been $27,000 back when I ordered them but are now $37,900

$27000 - 26% = $19980
vs
37,900 - 30% = $26,530

Difference without tax credit is $10,900 more today for 4 powerwalls.
Difference with tax credit is $6,550 today with 4 powerwalls.

Mine when PWs were still $6500 and the installation was free with solar. Solar was $2 / watt. Came out to about $28K after the 26% credit. I added another 4.8 kw of solar in May of this year at $2 / 2 watt just a few days before the price of solar jumped to something like $2.33 / watt.

Are your three Powerwalls the original with only 6.4 kWh of storage or the newer Powerwall2 with 13.5 kWh of storage? The $20,500 seems very low for three PW2s.

Edit: I saw your purchase agreement after I posted (BTW, it has your address on it) and mine was similar from 2020.

You could say that the increased credit from 26% to 30% covers the difference except that I got my second system at the old price...earlier this year....but will get the 30% on the old lower price :)

13.5 kwh. Total capacity at new was 40.433 kwh. Today reporting 39.549 kwh so in two years (from yesterday) I'm down nearly a kwh.

Powerwall pricing was adjusted, now the cost brings back a discount for bundling powerwall(s) and solar together, likely preparing for eventual ability to buy powerwall as standalone product again. My post was based on the chart that another user posted which showed comparable $ Tesla Solar and Powerwall Price Increase, May 2022
