Tesla Supercharger network

Here is an update on the status of the North American "Coming Soon" superchargers targeted to open in 2019. 13 sites opened in the U.S. and Canada in the last month for a total of 24 so far in 2019. Below is a list of recently opened superchqargers and 88 sites about which there is at least some information on the location. Sites with confirmed locations are shown at supercharge.info; details on all sites is available at the Supercharger Progress wiki.

With the launch of supercharger version 3 coming on Wednesday, there is speculation about which upcoming sites will be version 3. Nobody has yet found supercharger hardware labeled as something other than the 135 kW version 2 and 72 kW urban supercharders.

Why has no other company taken Tesla up on designing their cars to use the supercharger network?

I think a lot has to do with pride and stubbornness. The other car makers don't want Tesla to succeed and want to ghetto-ize the supercharger network. They basically want superchargers to go the way of Betamax video tape (though VHS is pretty much gone too). I would not be surprised if some of the new entrants in the market like Rivian sign on.

So far Rivian is explicitly not signing on. They are going CCS.

Free beats not free every time. Right now, the other EV manufacturers can sell EVs and not have to pay anything for a charge network. It’ll take several years before consumers realize that the Tesla network is vastly superior. Only when a lot of people start buying Tesla because of the superior charge network, will other EV manufacturers even consider being compatible with Tesla.

But see what's happening in Europe, there Tesla is making their SuC stalls CCS compatible. So now no one have to "consider being compatible with Tesla", they just are. Now all they have to do is sign an agreement with Tesla to be allowed to use it... (I think...)

Plug compatibility removes a major problem, but having a compatible plug does not mean there is a mechanism in place to identify the individual non-Tesla vehicle such that they can have the power turned on and be charged correctly. Much more would need to be done to make that work. Other charging providers often require a card of some type and Tesla doesn't have that capability. I suppose a phone app could work, but Tesla does not currently do that.

Plus, Tesla would not just be charging for power, but to help pay for the construction and maintenance of the network. Currently the pricing model includes money made from increased car sales to help pay for the hardware and maintenance, but non-Tesla users would pay significantly more.

It's happening sooner than you think! I specifically chose to buy a model 3 because of the supercharger network. It was the deciding factor that had me purchase a my Model 3 over a Bolt. I roll my eyes when I have to fall back to j1772 charging infrastructure. I've come across many stations that are malfunction (eyes on you evgo!!) and are still malfunctioning months later. Not to say the superchargers are perfect, I've experienced a malfunctioning stall here and there. Nothing took the entire station down and they were fixed relatively quickly (Egg harbor NJ for example). I rode with my buddy to DC in his I-Pace (which is a story for another thread) and we experienced 2 down stations that could have ended the trip if we didn't have more juice to get to the another station.

Why has no other company taken Tesla up on designing their cars to use the supercharger network?

Because it's a proprietary connector. By using Tesla's plug, you're locking yourself out from all the public chargers that are being installed by all the different 3rd parties. They would also rely on Tesla to build the superchargers (or become a charging infrastructure company yourself which some manufacturers may not want to do).

That's in the US at least. Fortunately Tesla are going with CCS in Europe, Australia/NZ, etc., the same as almost every other manufacturer.

You're assuming there will never be an adaptor. Once there are enough CCS chargers to matter, an adaptor will certain be available.

Tesla won't be able to use the 3rd party chargers being built?

That assumes Tesla will never make an adaptor. CCS in North America isn't exactly the same as CCS in Europe to prevent Europeans from selling their chargers without modification in North America. Today there are few CCS charging locations that are not at car dealers. This is changing, but it will be awhile before there are enough to warrant making an adaptor. Remember how long it took to make a CHAdeMO adaptor?

So theoretically another auto maker could build electric vehicles that could use the Tesla supercharger network and an adapter so they could use upcoming third party chargers?

They would need more than an adaptor. The reason is that every other charging system requires a card, while Tesla's network authenticates from the car. So to use the Tesla network, they would have to put in a communications chip and software. These could be built into the adaptor rather than the car, but it would still take more development effort than just an adaptor. Going from Tesla to CCS network would just require an adaptor.

Do tell, what was the ipace journey like?

They would need more than an adaptor. The reason is that every other charging system requires a card, while Tesla's network authenticates from the car. So to use the Tesla network, they would have to put in a communications chip and software. These could be built into the adaptor rather than the car, but it would still take more development effort than just an adaptor. Going from Tesla to CCS network would just require an adaptor.

Tesla has stated multiple times they are willing to partner with other automakers on the supercharger network. In the case lets say someone like Bollinger Motors takes them up on it, they would essentially build their vehicles to Tesla's charging spec and then could also develop their own inhouse adapters to use future third party charging networks, thus not be locked out of any network. Right?

That is my understanding.
