So Glovis Sunlight appears to be making a stop I the way to Zerbrudge in The UK. This could help keep UK deliveries moving. May also mean they’re short cars for Norway and Netherlands until at least next weeks ship due on the 30th.

Short on cars? If my information is correct besides the Glovis Sunlight we will have the Hoegh Oslo arriving on the 18th and the Glovis Courage on the 19th.

Tesla. Read the badge on the back of the red prototype seen in the Motor1 spy shots.

Can we agree that the "+" in "P100D+" stands for the extra motor?

Cheers!

Previously, when Tesla used + in the name was for P85+, which did not have extra motor, but better suspension to support cornering aka improved track performance.

They need to clean up the aesthetics on that air intake before they go to production.
Yup. One person's aesthetics is another's anesthetic.

Also no point to buy a current S/X either. People mistakenly believe that they're obsolete, outclassed, can't do sustained performance, etc.

I'm not happy with Tesla giving up its production-car-halo under the excuse that some "not available for a year prototype" is great. Show people what's good about the cars they can actually buy so that they have an actual excuse to buy them.
But if the current S/X really can't beat a Taycan on that particular performance metric, which - let's face it - it's
questionable whether it'd be able to?

At that point there's no loss in Osborneing yourself, especially if your preannouncement takes down the competitor too. It's a very old tactic in the computer industry - someone releases a product that beats yours in some metric, you immediately announce the in-development successor that beats theirs in that category, to keep people from getting into their ecosystem.

I have to love the public slanging match between Porsche and Tesla. It hardly hurts the Tesla brand to make the public think their main competition is Porsche, one of the strongest and enduringly sport/luxury brands in the industry. And it doesn't hurt Porsche for their new electric car to be compared to the most popular and innovative EV brand. We could see this one go on for awhile. The only disappointing thing is that the three-motor "Plaid" package for the S may be a year away. This PR battle would make more sense if it was coming in the next 3 to 6 months.

IMO, Elon/Tesla's response to the Taycan Nurburgring lap times, culminating in his tweet about next year's S,X *major* upgrade has turned into one big clusterf***, which will cause more pain for Tesla and TSLA in the short term. Elon should have never let Porsche taunt him on this issue. Teslas don't have to beat every EV and car on every metric. Did the Model S really need to better the Nurburgring time? — we all know that the Roadster can beat it. Teslas are already superior on a number of performance and practical metrics. And it was clear that the Taycan, despite the Nurbergring claim, was *overall* inferior to Model S. Elon and fans already noted this, and Elon even complimented Porsche on the Nurbergring achievement. Should have left it on that cordial note and moved on. A minor win for Porsche that would have soon faded from the consumers mind.

Instead, now what has happened?

(A) Everybody now knows that the stock, production S clearly can't beat the Taycan Nurbergring time. A minor disadvantage, that hardly matters to most customers, has been turned into a big deal for all to see.

(B) More importantly, after months of downplaying S,X upgrades, and sales finally starting to turn up, once again an impending S,X upgrade is thrown into the spotlight. And this time, it is not a rumor started by Fred at Electrek; it is straight from the horse's mouth. An S,X *major upgrade* is officially on record. This is now again going to negatively impact (Osborne) S,X sales over the next year. In a single tweet, Elon undid months of work and naysaying. And do we really believe that there won't be a delay of more than a year? Pray not. The longer the delay, the longer S,X sales suffer.

And all for what? So that everyone now knows that Teslas will *eventually* beat the Taycan Nurbergring time. Yay!

I would probably say that the benefit would be more like the other people said in that surprisingly there are a lot of people who still think a model S can only launch once and then needs 15 mins to cool down. to have it being stacked up against Porsche a lot of new people will research tesla and become more informed. This is tesla's way of riding Porsches advertising dollars.

I would think that
A) for those who know, they understand the difference is due to the top speeds, which 99% will never drive at.

B) Why would you wait for 3 motors edition that costs extra if you never go to track and 2 motors/greater range works fine for you?

The “Plaid” package has been in the works for 3 years. It’s not a surprise to see it begin testing a year prior to becoming official. It won’t be cheap and therefore is not a priority. It will be for a niche group. This should not deter people from current models.

This is not about a rash tweet, Tesla has clearly been preparing for this for months. The car is a working prototype and had already been shipped to the track long before Elon tweeted.

As someone said above, this gets Tesla a lot of free media attention and encourages people to compare Tesla's current specs directly to Porshce. This is perfect timing after a lot of customers on Porsche's Taycan waiting list have been highly disappointed by the pricing.

People clearly already believed further Model S/X upgrades were coming - here Elon is trying to shift the conversation - now he is acknowledging the changes but trying to imply they will only be for very expensive models and are still one year away. Whether or not this works I don't know, but I think there has been thought behind this strategy. But definitely, it will work better if they also complete laps with the currently available Raven P100D to raise awareness of the April Powertrain upgrade and fight cooling issue FUD.

Your wish is granted, plain vanilla raven Model S spotted today during the industry pool session (thus likely operated by Tesla).

I don't know why we've all become obsessed with track performance all of a sudden. I bet less than 0.2% of Tesla owners ever take their car on track.

Of course you are right. However, from a marketing perspective this catches the eyes of media outlets seeking clicks. That's of great benefit to Tesla, which does not advertise. Meanwhile, it gets a few "wows" from the public, and educates people who long thought that electric cars were merely upgraded golf carts.

It is not just going to be a 3 motor difference. It's a whole new EV powertrain, as explicitly stated in the tweets. New battery, motors, and electronics (not to mention a new chassis, as also stated in the tweets). All S,X going forward from there will have the same new basic powertrain and new chassis. Though there may be different trims, with 3 motors versus one or two motors.

One significant difference will be the battery architecture, either based on 2170 cells or some new cell/pouch tech (e.g., Maxwell, etc.). And one simple practical difference will be the difference between Model 3 and current S,X in terms of faster charge speeds and better fire resistance (perhaps even better than the 3). This is just one way it will be better. There will be other differences too.

You buy now, you're not going to get the latest tech coming out in a year. If you think it's just a difference in the number of motors or just a different trim level, you're being naive.

Depends on what we do not know-

1. Was Elon sitting around reading all the attention the Taycan was getting and on impulse move made a rash tweet? The next gen S mule with the Roadster goodies was in secret testing and his tweet blew that up. Cementing a lot of people's suspicions of something big and better was in the S/X pipeline.

Or

2. Elon being in the automotive industry is at least tied into some auto trade sites such as autonews.com and has a pretty good idea of all the manufacturers product launch cadence. Saw some time ago that the Taycon and ID3 was going to debut at the Frankfurt Autoshow, and that MB and BMW will be debuting their EV models in 2020/21. EM knew Porsche like every other automaker that has a fast car and suspension tuned on the Ring would make a big deal about lap times and planned accordingly. S/X sales are trending down, and the Raven whatever that was apparently did not stop it. Nothing to loose sales wise, creating some excitement and bringing some free pub to Tesla.

Whether this was cluster of epic porportions or a carefully calculated plan depends on perspective. Could be a little of both.
