I'm struggling to imagine this turning out well.

I'm sure boomercons who watch fox news will clutch their pearls in horror, but they weren't going to buy a Tesla anyway.

No,OEMs favor pouch cells because they are run by mechanical engineers.

Mechanical engineers have a bias toward the least number of parts.

They see 250 pouch cells or 7000 cylinder cells, they will choose the 250 part option.

Lowering the number of parts in a car has been key to cost reductions.

Fair enough to have bias against count of unique parts. To have bias against a large count of identical cells would be a mistake, especially if there is opportunity to site pack making a conveyer ride distance from cell making, and robotise the entire line.
