Tesla has updated its leasing terms to include four different lease-end options. Customers can return their vehicle to Tesla, extend their lease, purchase their Tesla, or upgrade to a new Tesla. New details added to the the company’s web site are posted below.

Lease-End Options

If your lease is ending in the next few months, now is a good time to start looking at which option best suits your needs.

Upgrade to a New Tesla

Model S is better than ever. Over the last three years, we’ve added new features like updated styling and interior, Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive, Ludicrous Speed, Self-Driving hardware and more range. We also introduced Model X, the safest, fastest and most capable SUV on the road. View local inventory to take delivery as soon as this week.

Purchase Your Tesla

It’s easy to fall in love with your Tesla, so we made it easy for you to keep it. You may purchase your Tesla before your lease ends, or at point of maturity. Your Tesla is protected by a 4-year or 50,000 miles/80,000 km (whichever occurs first) New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The New Vehicle Limited Warranty may be extended to 8 years or 100,000 miles. In addition, your Tesla is protected by an 8-year or unlimited miles Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty.

Return

If you plan to return your Tesla, the Excess Wear and Use Guide will help navigate you through the process. A Tesla representative will contact you as your return date approaches.

End of Lease FAQs

Can I extend my lease?

If your account is in good standing, you can extend your lease up to 6 months beyond the original maturity date listed on your lease. To apply for an extension, email [email protected].

How do I extend my warranty?

If you want to purchase your Tesla, warranty extensions are available. Visit our Vehicle Warranty page for more information.

Where can I get repairs done before the inspection?

Tesla operates service centers across the United States and Canada. Find your nearest Service Center.

Can an independent inspection company perform my vehicle’s inspection prior to lease end?

To ensure accurate evaluation of your vehicle, only Tesla can facilitate lease end inspection.

What is Self-Inspection?

Self-inspection simplifies and quickens the lease end process. You will answer a series of questions and upload photos of your Tesla to give us an idea of your vehicle’s condition. Contact a Lease End Specialist to coordinate Self-Inspection.

If I have to wait for my new Tesla, do I get a loaner vehicle?

Loaner vehicles are not available during transition between vehicles. If you are in need of a vehicle sooner than the estimated delivery date for new vehicles, local inventory may be available for a quick delivery.

If I don’t live near a Service Center, how do I get my Tesla?

Transportation may be provided to retrieve your Tesla by a per-mile fee. Contact your local Service Center for questions or to arrange transport.

When I checked a couple of years ago the problem with buying the car after lease was that you lose the USA federal tax credit. It was used to lower the cost for making lease payments but then subtracted out for the buyout price (making it pure profit for the leasing company). It made lease-to-own a poor deal compared to buying outright or turning in the car and buying a used car of similar vintage.

Haven't seen any reports that they have changed this perverse policy, although someone may have more recent info on Tesla leasing.
