Tesla will match Carmax price

I am receiving my new P90DL on Saturday!
Tesla offered my 47k for my ride - the guarantee that was negotiated with the original loan i made with Tesla in 2013. I took it to carmax on a whim this Friday and they offered me $52k No brainer what i should do. The crazy thing is that now Tesla as of this Friday will match the carmax price. I can exchange the car at a Tesla SVC and they will apply the credit to the new Tesla down payment!
Highly recommend going to Carmax and getting an appraisal from them before just accepting Tesla low ball appraisal.

Do you know if that was just in your instance (and glad it worked out for you!), or is an actual Tesla policy now?
Thank you.
Jess

When i left Carmax i called Tesla specialist coordinating my delivery and mentioned what the carmax rep told me.
She called me back the next day, Saturday. She laughed saying as of today you can bring in a carmax appraisal and Tesla will match the price and accept the trade in at a SvC. Which is what i'm going to do. Unless someone offers me a better offer in the next few days.

the only discrepancy is that Carmax has a policy of 1 week or 500 miles. The Tesla specialist told me i have 1 week or 250miles to turn it in.
not sure what is accurate.

Good to know, appreciate the info and prompt reply. Once my delivery time table becomes clear, will certainly see what Carmax will offer.

Before I had Tesla inspect my car, my DS told me they would probably match any written offer I could get. Texas Direct Auto (more convenient) and CarMax gave me the same price. Tesla was much lower. I had to get a second Texas Direct Auto quote because it has to be "live" at the time Tesla makes its offer. This was in June.

If Tesla will match, not only will that help to make the actual deal a one-stop shop (after the trip to CarMax), at least in NC it may save you some cash as well: the sales tax paid on the new car is based on the difference between the amount of the new car and the trade-in value. (i.e., the value of the trade-in is not subject to sales tax)

I'm in the middle of dealing with trading in for my P90DL too. Marietta GA SC said take my car to Carmax last week. The offer expires before delivery on Thursday so they told me to take it back to Carmax and get a new offer.

Turns out the Carmax appraiser on duty when I went back in is in charge of the Tesla-Carmax trade in program here in GA. He said Carmax is now in a partnership with Tesla and buying the trades at the offered price after Tesla completes their delivery. He also said they will honor the offer for 14 days or longer based on circumstances.

Apparently the regional Tesla trade in manager was unaware of the 14 day allowance. The Carmax appraiser happened to have the Tesla manager's info and they had a spirited exchange. Long story short, Carmax is honoring the offer and Tesla is accepting it.

Tesla told me the same thing, but then low-balled me by $2000 the day before I was scheduled to pick up. Be very wary if they have a company called AIM schedule an appointment to inspect your car for the trade-in. The AIM guy did a purely visual inspection of my car, didn't take it for a test drive, and Tesla said they could no longer match CarMax's offer based on the appraisal. I ended up getting a rental car (that Tesla paid for) to go pick up my car, then took my old car to CarMax and sold it to them at their original offer price.

Yeah, especially for those of us that are nowhere near a CarMax. I tried calling, but they won't give me ANY idea of what they might offer until I spend hours and hours driving and charging to get there. Plus, if I really have to trade the car in within 250 miles...I am not sure I can do that after driving home and then later driving to Tesla.

I posted this in the Roadster forum, but I'll ask here too - by any chance has anybody taken a Roadster to a CarMax? If so I'd appreciate a PM to learn what they offered before I spend a very long day possibly wasting my time. Thanks!

I can help you. You'd be wasting your time taking your Roadster to Tesla, because you're not going to sell it anyway. ;)

Funny. Selling a Roadster is a really hard thing to do and I will definitely miss it; but a Model S is just so much more practical and I have a real need for that now. I am hoping that a fully loaded P90DL will not be THAT much less fun, even though it weighs a full ton more than the Roadster (ugh).

By the way, both CarMax and Tesla were familiar with the new policy and sounded excited about it.

Hi,

Sorry, just to confirm this is a Tesla you took to Carmax and Tesla will match? The only reason I ask is that I saw this post last week and contacted my advisor letting him know I'd be taking my Tesla to Carmax for a "second option" and he quickly replied back saying Tesla will not match Carmax pricing on a Tesla, but they will on any other make.

I have a 2014 P85 Autopilot car that I am thinking about flipping for a inventory pre-refresh 2016 P90DL but of course Tesla has offered me less than what I owe on it (it's not quite 2 years old and I do have the buy back guarantee as of next December). I was offered $64,500 blind by Tesla (in writing) which is $2000 more than the best I've been able to find via other blind offers (Autotrader, Autonation and Vroom - with Vroom being the next highest at $62,500). I'm hoping Carmax will offer me more to make the deal make sense to me.

But now I'm unsure if I'd be wasting my time or not.

Thanks in advance,
Eddie

I went to Carmax with my 7 Series BMW and they were a bit low on the offer. Sold private party for 4.5K higher. There was a discussion on Bimmerfest Forum that Carmax was sometimes higher and sometimes lower. So, may be worth it to spend 30 minutes for an appraisal.
