Musk announced on Wednesday during the Q1 2020 earnings call on today,

“Full Self-Driving” system will become available as a monthly subscription later this year."

“It was to make available FSD as an option. In our view, buying FSD is an investment in the future and we're confident that his investment that will pay off to the consumer,” Musk continued. “My guess is the FSD option is something people will not regret doing.”

A company rep then reiterated that rolling the upfront cost of the FSD system into the overall vehicle loan “will be the least expensive to pay on a monthly basis.”

So if a loan is the "least expensive" may to pay monthly whats the subscription price likely to be > $100/mth ?

Unless you only want FSD occasionally. I would gladly pay $50/day to rent FSD each time I went on a road trip.

Yes $50*365days is really expensive. But $50*4days / year is a no-brainer.

We'll see what we get, but it says monthly subscription. Making assumptions but if loan is cheapest option A Tesla quoted, best case that's $100/mth. That would imply that subscription is more than $100/mth. If that's the case hopefully you can turn it on and off monthly without having to sign up for a term.

$7000/72=$97.

Curious how this would work for owners who bought their vehicle with HW 2.5 before AP became standard on all Teslas. Would we be required to pay $3K for AP to access the FSD subscription or would there be another tier for AP & FSD monthly subscription (currently $10K if purchased without subscription)?

Given that it’s going to be done in the app and if you app is showing $10k where mine shows $7k; then I would expect the monthly fee to be different depending on what each person has paid for. Otherwise it’s not fair to one group or another.

Yours might be $140/mth. Since you don’t have AP and need to pay $10k for FSD.

Where mine might be $100/mth. Since I already have AP and need to pay $7k for FSD.

Just a guess.

I’ll guess $200 per month. That is based on $7000 over 3 years, $7000/360 Is $194 per month. I would not think they would want to wait 6 years to get the $7k, which is the $100/mo. amount. Since the subscription model is presumably to increase Tesla’s revenues, it’ll need to be a higher amount than $100/mo.

I’m not a fan of subscriptions for software, and I don’t think I’d like this either. I guess subscriptions for car updates might be next.

Tesla has gone through some changes. When I bought my car, Tesla was never going to make money from selling electricity at superchargers. Now the cost of supercharger power is much higher than the cost of the electricity supplied from the power companies. Tesla is going to start seeing some real competition. I don’t think people will stick with Tesla if buying a Tesla causes an ongoing financial hemorrhage.

Tesla hasn’t thus far been hellishly good at delivering on promises. Unhappy subscribers could make Tesla the Comcast of the car world.

I could see Tesla charging extra on insurance if you don't use it (or have it).
Or higher deductible maybe if your fault and w/o FSD engaged.
