Question about the trade in program Texas offers in regards to sales tax:

Does the trade in tax incentive only apply if you trade into the dealer you are purchasing from

OR

Can you trade in to any dealer and still take advantage of the tax incentive on a new vehicle purchase?

(Tax program referring to the only paying taxes on the difference in price between the trade in vehicle and the new vehicle purchase)

Our MSM pick up date is November 5th. Ordered September 7th. Saw a truck loaded with 3-4 model ys in Temple on the way from Dallas to Austin. Hopefully Austin is getting their shipment in.

Anyone had any trouble with insurance for pickup? Texas doesn't require insurance for new car purchases for at least 20 days, yet we keep getting requests for insurance with the new car's VIN on it. We've already given them insurance with our current car on it. We don't want to pay insurance on an extra car and plan on selling the car we're replacing within the 20 days, so we very much don't want to pay insurance on another car we won't drive. Of course contacting the delivery specialist has been an absolute pain and we haven't been able to speak with anyone.

Just got this info finally:
Due to the dealership laws in Texas, we cannot generate dealer tags in Texas and have to generate temporary permits instead, which require us to have insurance for the vehicle. It it definitely a different process for sure so please let us know if you have any additional questions!

So that sucks. Guess I'll need to insure 3 cars for a bit. :|

I was required to provide proof of coverage (VIN listed on my policy) prior to shipment. I think you have to have it due to the fact that Tesla can’t sell cars in Texas and we must pay in full before shipment as well

Yeah, I had to fight through that as well. My insurance agent had never done a Tesla, so it was a learning experience for him.

I got this from the Austin Gallery, in case it helps:

Please reply all with a copy of your Texas Insurance Card showing the VIN of your new Tesla and coverage effective immediately. This needs to be sent over ASAP due to recent changes with Texas regulations we cannot request temporary tags without VIN specific proof of insurance. Your VIN is in the subject line, most reputable insurance companies will provide a prorated refund for any period that the insurance was in effect prior to the actual delivery date.

Has anyone recently taken delivery scheduled your appointment to register the car after receiving the docs from Tesla? I just scheduled the first available appointment was Dec 22. Yes 7 weeks from now. Anyone else similar experience? I'm in the Houston area. Thanks!

Not sure what docs you’re referring to exactly (MVPA?), but I am receiving trade in documents to sign from Tesla tomorrow, and today I just got the text to schedule delivery 11/23-25. I’m in Austin. Ordered a black/black LR MY w/induction & FSD 10/21, VIN 11/6, delivery offered 11/23-25. Was given 4-8 weeks from order estimate, so I got lucky.

So, delivery about 2 1/2 weeks from VIN here in Austin. My SA said they usually get shipped via train from Milpitas CA to Nashville, then by truck to Austin, or sometimes he’s seen them go straight to Austin by truck.

Mine went by rail to Arkansas then by truck to Austin.

Only if you are trading in to the dealer you are purchasing from. For example, if you got $5K on trade for your car and bought a new car from the same dealer for $50K, you would owe tax on $45K. If you sold your car to CarMax (or any other dealer or even a private sale), you would owe tax on the full price of the new car, $50K. This means you need to consider the amount of additional sales tax when you plan on selling your car to someone else before buying a new one.
