Yesterday, I traveled from NH to Paramus, NJ to pickup a brand new 2024 MYLR AWD.
I am super ecstatic and enthused to have this vehicle in my life.
I ordered on June 3rd, just missing the great financing opportunity offered in May (0.99%). I opted for the Deep Metalic Blue and included FSD, because of course I did. I’ve fallen in love with everything about TSLA after spending about 6 months looking at other EV options. I traded my Ford Escape Hybrid in for my new car, named “Eevee”.
The ride to NJ and back is ~4 hrs. Eevee handled with ease.

- The Paramus, NJ location was clean and efficient for delivery. I used the restroom, customer lounge and the overall showroom space. The customer lounge had a Keurig, but it was asking for water and adding water did not suffice. There were many people waiting but not for long. I had found my car in the parking lot (which is small here but workable).
- It took me about 40 minutes in-and-out. This included some trade-in documentation, issues with removing my plates from the rusted Ford Escape screws, conducting an inspection of the vehicle, establishing settings to my liking and supercharging.
- I supercharged to 90% because of the distance to home.

Why pick-up in NJ?
- I was financing through Tesla partner
- To avoid sales tax, (NH has no sales tax but also does NOT currently have a Tesla location as the Service/Sales in Londonderry, NH is not yet open), NJ is the closest state.
- NOTE: If I was not financing through a Tesla partner, I believe I could have had delivery for $750 but would need to “accept delivery” before the car would be placed on a currier to be delivered (I.e., accepting delivery sight-unseen).

The ride home was smooth and enjoyable. The sound system worked quite well. The navigation options were something I played with but I did manage to route to a supercharger on the way home so that the battery would be preconditioned. This turned out to be less than a need to charge and more like a need for food. A Wendy’s Dave Single+Fries hit the spot.

Have I figured out all the autopilot features yet? No. But I have become comfortable with one-pedal driving.

I am currently on software 12.3.6 and believe that it takes a few weeks to get an update after taking delivery of a new vehicle. 12.4 will come……

When I arrived home, I was able to plugin to the Universal Wall Charger and showcase the car to the family. I’m feeling good about the purchase.

Did you drive home to NH with a temporary NJ plate? Did the sales center explain the title and registration process for your new vehicle?
Great questions.

I have a temporary non-resident NJ plate (I guess even the temp plates make a distinction here). It is only the rear temporary plate. I do have the “hardware” for the front plate, as required in the state - I just need to install the 3M-sticker-like-adhesive.

I was given:
  • My old plates
  • A temporary registration (to accommodate the temporary plate)
  • The Maloney/Molroney sticker (lol…forgetting the name - but I got it!)
  • My old car’s registration
The app (and many posts on TMC) did inform me that I will receive my registration documents within a few weeks, up to 3 weeks. This is close to when registration is needed so I’ll be super on the lookout. I did receive a “Welcome to Model Y Ownership” email and both that email and the service advisor had told me to go register at the DMV - but in NH you can do the state and town portions at most Town Clerks.

Title will fully go to the lien holder.

I expect to utilize a local shop - Duncans European Automative in nearby Londonderry - for inspection as they are familiar with Teslas as an inspection station. (Tesla themselves of course, not being state inspection stations as they do not want to be inspecting emission-generating vehicles no matter the efficiency).

So from Sales…there was a reminder that stuff would come in the mail and that I should go to my state DMV.

Congratulations! I will be doing the same trip within the next couple of weeks. I’m so excited it’s like the only thing I can think about, haha. I’m still awaiting a finalized date. I don’t have a trade-in so I’m likely going to do a one way rental car. My biggest concern right now are all the stories I hear about poor quality and the inspection checklists. I’ve heard you have 24hrs/100miles to identify any issues? Did you get a mileage extension due to the distance to home? Again, congratulations!

The wait is so painfully exciting isn’t it?

I did not have any issues with the car at delivery. I can tell you driving from NJ to NH and then trying to do a thorough inspection (pretending to be the “car guy” who knows the things) is challenging because you really just want to get home. But no issues were identified at delivery or in the ~week since. I did not inquire about an extension due to the distance home but I wouldn’t think Tesla would make an adjustment based on where I choose to live. I get it that they are really pulling us to NJ for purchase but that’s really a sales tax favor.

If you were going to inquire about the distance home and ability to still claim issues, you might want to ask in-app in advance and get anything in writing. Further, if you notice something on the way home, it may be best to stop, note it in-app or call Tesla, create a video showing issue and current mileage, in order to support the later claim. The drive home from NJ to NH will take all the “100 miles”+ so if you notice something 78 miles in, getting that documented somehow before you are at 100 miles would be in your interest for supporting the claim.

It’s been about a month since MYLR AWD joined the home.

On the Registration front, I received a packet in the mail with still 10+ days on the temporary plates. I registered the car without issue but will note that the application for a title becomes your responsibility, where I am used to NH dealerships processing those for me in the past. So that was a small, but still additional charge to the registration. I also did not transfer plates, I obtained Conservation plates. I did turn in my trade-ins old registration which gave me some money back. Finally, I paid my registration for some additional time so I would not have to register again on my birthday in an upcoming month. All told, it was about $1400 which includes a $100 state EV fee.

I had no issues attaching the license plate bracket for the front or replacing out the license plates.

I did end up doing the state inspection at Duncans European Automotive and they were knowledgeable, quick and gave it a vacuum and wash which I thoroughly appreciated.

I have not had any issues in NH having the temporary NJ plates or for a time only having the back plate attached.

I am much more familiar with FSD being on 12.5.1.1. Still very enthused about the purchase. I would make this choice again.

Next up, I want the Londonderry location being built to open and to install the snow tire package there. We will see….

I'm obviously late to the party in congratulating you on your new Model Y ...... just joined the forum this morning and yeah I know, I know it's no excuse haaaaa🤣!!!

Congratulations on the ride .......... I had picked up my own Model Y from the same location although I only had a half hour ride back home than 4 hours like yourself?!?!! We did spend our Labor Day weekend in Vermont and probably had the same drive back from your area. Such a beautiful and peaceful part of our country that too many people aren't aware of

Hoping to head back sometime next month to enjoy the foliage and some long needed quality time with my partner in crime sans kiddos 🙂

Hope everything is going well with your new ride!
