Dborn, have you ever needed to charge at the maximum three phase dual charger rate at home? Does it really matter if charging stops at 1 AM instead of 6 AM? On the rare occasions that you need to drive somewhere quickly you can always use a SuperCharger.

True, dual chargers may allow for unforeseen contingencies but if they were really necessary then surely Tesla would have them installed by default. What do you think?

Does anybody know how much the dual charger is for the Australian market? My understanding is that we (in WA) can elect to have the second charger installed prior to delivery at the Sydney or Melbourne delivery centre's. If we don't get them installed prior to delivery then we would need to wait until a service centre opened in WA (at some stage in the future).

Trav

it cost me $1800 when ordered with the car in December. It is probably a few hundred more now and there might be an installation charge as an after market item

not sure if it is really necessary given that most home charging starts with a partially charged battery already. Plus home charging should be on off peak

regardless a good option

Woohooo!!
Got my VIN
930xx

Happy Vinday to you as well.

Hi Trav,

I asked the question on the 13th of May and got this response from Adam the Delivery Experience Specialist:
"If you would like a second charger installed in your Model S, that can be done when it initially arrives in Australia before you export it. The cost of getting this done (to increase your charging speed with a three phase wall connector) is currently set at $2600. This price could change in the future."

Joining in on the VIN happiness, ours has been added overnight (order placed on 1st May with delivery currently set at late September).

I was in CA last week and arranged a test drive at the Pasadena Tesla store.

I am still buzzed – once the “co-pilot” saw I could drive he changed plans and took me to the hills – great windy road with minimal traffic, apart from the steep drops and rock walls a fantastic place to test drive the D. The Tesla guy was very relaxed so this was very enjoyable.

The new seats are great – more sculptured and suit a performance car, the 4 wheel drive felt more poised, not as squirmy flooring it and very safe to drive hard.

The car actually felt lighter and smaller than the P85+.

PS: took it to nnn mph (that when I glanced) before pegging it back – the guy was very cool…

The car is really worth it - glad I got the P85+ when I did but the handling, poise and balance make the D something special.

Cheers
Higgy

Congratulations Mark ... your sequence number is quite different to mine, any ideas why that would be?
We are both P85D's. Is it because yours has been in the system that much longer?

Tesla started using the last 6 digits as a sequence number, instead of the last 5, since somewhere around the 80,000s. Previously, the 6th-last character was a letter indicating the vehicle series, e.g. a P for Production in mhh's VIN. Also, P85Ds now have "H4" in the 7th and 8th characters whereas it used to be "H2".

Hey Cynix,

Most anxious to know when your build starts. I seem to be 7 days behind you. We don't know how far you are behind mhh because of the interruption in the production of RHDs which came about only after mhh got his VIN.

If the VIN sequence number is any indication of queue position (which it's not, apparently), mine is about 12,000 behind mhh (890xx).

They are building 1000 cars a week at present....

Yes, I also gleaned that stat from somewhere. I'd guess about half or less of them would be P85Ds.

I'd say the VIN does represent to some extent a place in the queue however not mhh's VIN or anyone who received their VIN before the announced interruption in production of RHD dual cars (like mhh). But I would say that the difference in VINs between me, Cynix, Trav etc... are representative of when our numbers get called.

One thing though, it will all bottleneck before the ship leaves the port. So mhh's car will be sitting around gathering dust until the last of our Aussie order batches comes of the line and the Freight Skipper starts tapping his watch in unison with his foot, whilst shaking his head and making kangaroo noises.
