The Dash-cam I want

My perfect dash-cam:
- Streams to the cloud, so data can't be lost if the device is destroyed or stolen
- If that's too much data, streams to a storage unit which can be hidden anywhere in/on/under the car
- Records sound as well

Does such a device exist?

comma.ai has an Android app that converts your smartphone to do exactly what you described. It's in closed beta at the moment and requires a Galaxy S7, One Plus 3, or Nexus 6P. I suspect we'll see more phones supported in the future.

Not a bad idea! Just buy some cheap android and install the app, job done.
I wonder what data would be required? Let's say 4hrs/day of motion, data rate maybe 4Mbps? Plex steams 720p at that rate.
So, 4*60*60*31*4 = 57600Mbits = 7200MB = 7.2GB per month.
Pretty hefty data plan, but doable.

BlackVue cams have Wifi, become like a router that other devices can connect to. Unsure if streaming is supported but if so you could have a simple on-board capture/record device, which could also (via a second connection, 4G) backup to a cloud.
