JMO, and thoughts. Could the strategy of other players that develop EVs, be that they do this knowing it will be a flop. Since Tesla has set the bar so high, implementing the charging network and making EVs both practical and enjoyable, the other car companies know their cars are doomed. Then they can say we tried it but the public is not embracing them so we stopped focusing on EV's thus trying a reverse psychology approach?

The problem that the automakers and the auto-press have created for themselves is the whole "Tesla Killer" narrative.
Best publicity that Tesla ever had since it firmly established that theirs are the EVs that must be outclassed in terms of range, performance, recharging and price.
REALLY difficult to achieve all four.

That was the strategy until 2012. Since then it's been starting to turn as Tesla eats at their profits.

Well, the mission was to get the whole industry producing EVs.

Elon commented several years ago about how he was surprised it was taking so long for competition to get any traction. I think in the beginning there was a naive idea that, "If we show everyone it's possible to make a great electric car, then all the other car companies will join in!" Now it's becoming clear that didn't work. The new strategy is more like: "If we start taking away their market share and eating their lunch, then the other car companies will have to join in — or die."
