The yellow screen fringe, seems to be a bigger issue for them.

Unless it is yellowing because of age. It is certainly reasonable that Tesla got a large batch of displays that would all age and "fail" at about the same time.

It would have to be a pretty large batch. ;)

I should have mentioned that my loaner S had a higher VIN than my 2017 S by more than 50,000. My X and S were both built within 5 months of each other so more possible there, but still unlikely since Tesla likely built 30,000 other X/S cars in between.

FWIW, here's the breakdown:

2018 S Loaner: MCU 2, AP 2.5
2017 S: MCU 1, AP 2.0 (January build)
2017 X: MCU 1, AP 2.0 (June build)

All developed fringe on 2018.36.2. All within several days (but not immediately after updating to 36.2).

I believe the chances of it being software related are slim. At least mine looks much worse when the sun hits at an angle.

Mine was a thick white ring... They were all amazed when they saw it, said it was the first one like that they ever saw.View attachment 340495

Different adhesive used from the others? We had our 3/17 MS yellow border screen replaced first part of this year. My husband said it's starting to happen again although still somewhat faint. When we had it replaced before it was very evident. We've been holding off doing anything since we've seen others experiencing a repeat after replacement. At least it's not the bubble issue with leaking industrial adhesive from delamination. Hopefully we don't ever experience that.

My bet is on firmware. Both my 2017 cars developed it on about the same day. Moreover, I was driving a 2018 loaner that also developed it while we had it (while the 2017 cars were in for service!).

The odds of all 3 cars' hardware failing within days seem pretty remote.

Definitely don’t think it’s firmware. On my car the discoloration was still obvious even with the center display completely powered down and black.

After waiting 2 weeks just to get in for an appointment to have our screen changed out, then having it in waiting mode outdoors for a week - it finally got moved from the back lot & into the shop for the swap out. Two days later - after picking up the car, immediately we noticed the screen was STILL yellow. Pulled over to the entrance and the senior mucky-muck came out saying corporate came down with the following decree - "no more swap outs until we get this fixed". The long wait for nothing brought out the snark .... "just to be clear - after patiently waiting over a year for a ghosting fix - and a ½ shaft vibration fix - we now get to suck it up & start waiting for non yellow screen fixes?" Considering how long it took for the appointment, and how long it took them just to get the car back to us after doing nothing, this decision makes sense, if only to decrease the insane back load of repair work they seem to be doing lately. It must be sweet - to be the only game in town.

We've had 2 screen replacements on our 2017 S 100D due to the yellow banding. If Tesla has to switch the design/manufacturing of the touchscreen to permanently correct the problem, then it makes sense that they'll eventually run out of the parts to do replacements (which will likely fail again) and instead want to wait for a new batch of touchscreens that won't have this issue.

While it's frustrating to have (we've had it twice), it shouldn't affect operation.

Hopefully the new part will really fix the issue this time...
