Theft/Vandalism - Broken passenger window

I work in a high-rise with a parking garage that is regularly patrolled by visible security. Yesterday evening as I left work, I saw several people I knew to be security milling around my car. I thought I was in for some Tesla Time, but then saw the broken glass. My front passenger side window was blown out, with nearly all of the glass gone. Most of it was in a pile outside the car. A small amount of it was in the car, though not all that much. And quite a bit of it was strewn all around - in front of the car, several stalls over, etc. (Sorry about these photos - they're from the security report.)

I don't keep much in my car, but I did have a hard drive plugged into the USB ports and sitting in the open in the center tray. I also have the Beltronics STiR Plus display and Escort Live controls mounted to the bottom of the cubby, and a few items in the trunk. It's obvious that nobody entered the car. Given the security presence in this garage, there are very few car prowls, and the glass going mostly outward suggested to me and to the security guys that this wasn't a typical smash job (nor are there any marks in the paint, as you would expect if somebody hit it with their car). It really looks like it just exploded outwards.

Luckily, I had pleasant weather for the 35-mile drive home last night. Interesting, though: I used to drive my ICE vehicles with windows down from time to time (and a Jeep with top and doors off), and it never really bothered me, but after driving the Model S for a month, boy do ICE cars smell bad! (Unfortunately, I'm stuck driving one until this gets fixed.)

I called Tesla Ownership Experience last night, and they opened a ticket but suggested I call local service this morning. Just did that, and they seem like they are going to treat it as a warranty issue. I've heard (on these forums) of windshields spontaneously cracking, but hadn't heard of side windows blowing out. Hope this is not widespread. They were of course very interested in this issue, and indicated that Tesla engineering would be alerted to look into it.

If a lot of glass was strewn around it's quite possible that something impacted against the window (in the hands of someone?). It's not unusual to find most of the glass outside the car when there's a break in; typically it often falls just inside the door and then spills on the floor when the robber opens the door.

I seriously doubt it was a spontaneous blow out. That glass isn't under tension like the windshield might be. I'm worried about my Model S in our parking lot because I've been told that there have been a lot of break-ins lately in my garage at work down on the Seattle waterfront.

And I would worry about break-ins just about anywhere else in Seattle. But this garage (Union Square in Seattle) has a regular and visible security presence. In 12+ years of parking here not only have I never had a problem, I've never heard of someone having a problem, or seen any signs of car prowls. The head of security told me that Union Square has the lowest rate of car prowls in downtown Seattle, and I believe it. I mean, it could have been that - or it could have been someone just smashing it to make a statement (though there are plenty of other $75k-plus cars regularly parked in this garage), or ... who knows. I can't say what happened, but I'm glad Tesla didn't dismiss it as not their problem, and is looking into it.

I should also mention: There's a pretty obvious dash-cam in front of the rear-view mirror. A Blackvue DR500GW-HD, which had I gotten around to hooking it to full-time and not switched power, would be able to shed more light on what happened. Believe me, I'll be making that adjustment shortly. But it's one more reason I just find it hard to believe that someone intentionally did this.

It's certainly possible, though it seems like it would take some effort to hit the window (hard enough to break it) yet leave no mark on the door. While I've never tried, I have to think it takes a significant amount of force to shatter a car window (at least one that isn't defective in some way).

Tempered glass does just explode sometimes. I haven't heard about this happening to car windows, but it certainly happens to shower glass, sometimes. The glass can become invisibly damaged, and then later explode without warning.

It seems odd to me for someone to break the window but not take anything.

With the right tool, it doesn't even take anything more than a single finger's force:

Teenagers who know this trick will sometimes just do this for the hell of it, unfortunately.

It is true that certain resonant frequencies can make tempered glass shatter as well, but that's a bit rarer.

Learned something from TMC today! Guess I didn't have a proper delinquent upbringing :p

Update: It's now pretty clear that this was vandalism/theft. I only this morning remembered an item that had been on the passenger front floor, and which is gone. My bad. I've informed Tesla of this - no defect or warranty issue here, just a car that attracted the wrong kind of attention.

(For those interested: The garage is testing out now low-energy LED lights that dim when they don't sense movement. I'm a big fan of LED lighting for some of the same reasons I'm a fan of Tesla, but they have their shortcomings. One is that they don't cast very wide light, and in this case that means that with the lights over the "roadway" portion of the garage, the stalls are fairly dark even with the lights fully on. When they dim it's even worse, and in this case probably provided decent cover for a thief.)

Should know this, but do our cars have an alarm?

Yes. Not sure if it sounds for a broken window but will definitely sound if door is opened.

Happy to hear you know what caused it. Still a shame it happened. Thanks for keeping us informed.
