On my Prius, it would cost $188 or more to update to the "latest" maps..

yeah we never updated our prius because I couldn't justify the cost, we always just used our phones as a backup, this is so much better.

charging for maps is a dumb business model as long as Google maps are free.

It is definitely a cool way to handle the updates, but it's certainly not 'free' - Tesla owners pay up front.
