Thoughts on Future Resale

I took advantage of used Model 3 SR+ valuations last year to upgrade to LR AWD.

Purchased 2019 SR+ for $38,990 and sold to Carvana for roughly $36,000 (don’t remember exact number) with 22k miles.

Was good enough for me to take the small loss and upgrade (cheaper than leasing!). The SR+ was a great entry into EVs, and it helped me decide that I wanted one long term - the LR AWD checked all the boxes for me at the time.

Just wanted to update on here, my 18 Model 3 LR RWD with 33k miles Basic Autopilot just went from 31600 to 27500 from Tesla's Online Trade in System.
With the recent price changes I decided to check my trade in value from Tesla again as well for my 2018 LR RWD w/ 17.5kmi, AP, 19" wheels:
  • Nov. 2020 @ 15.2k mi.: $35.4k
  • Feb. 2021 @ 17.7k mi.: $30.3k
It's a bummer because my trade-in values from Carvana, Vroom, Shift basically stayed the same but I had hoped to trade-in through Tesla for the tax benefits, especially in Seattle w/ our 10.5% vehicle sales tax

Same here, oh well, Im sure it'll change by the time the Tax Incentive comes back.

I paid $47k for my 19 M3P Stealth with 6k miles on it 10 months ago. Now with almost 20k, It is still worth almost the same lol my mind is blown! Even came with a clearbra!

Yea, the stealth and SR+ seem to keep their value really well. I thought that the LR RWD would keep its value better w/ it's bigger battery pack but I often see it priced within $1-2k of SR+.

No doubt, I would think Tesla would give more for trade in on their own vehicles but it doesn't seem to be the case.

And trust me, I'd love to see values on these cars stay high. My last 2 cars (Audi RS4 and Porsche 997 Turbo) both ended up holding their value very well, but neither is mass produced or utilize quick-to-outdate technologies. They are both over 10 years old which provided enough time for a niche following willing to pay a bit more for low mileage and well cared for examples.

+1. My 991.2 911 held up surprisingly well. About 25% depreciation over 3 years... and I sold it to a used car dealer. I’d estimate closer to 20% if I had the time and willingness to do a private party sale.

I’ll caveat that with we’re living in weird times right now, so I’m not sure how that’ll translate to the future. The dealer told me that since the pandemic, used sports car sales are way up because people have nothing fun to do with their extra cash.
