I was all set to take delivery of my P3D on 8/15. Unfortunately my company has decided to move me cross country, so I had to reject and put in a different delivery location (Tesla said they could not just ship that car cross country for me).

What's been the experience with people on the "4 to 6 week time frame" to rematch VIN? My delivery specialist was fairly confident that I could expect delivery in my new location around early September.

My rematch time (for a similar scenario) was about 10 days, but that was for a RWD. It actually worked out in my benefit - first VIN was a late August delivery the next one I am picking up Tuesday....

Can't you just give power of attorney to a trusted person and ship the car across country? I know It would cost more, but no waiting.

Would have to not only register it to buy it but then reregister it (expensive) but also would miss out of my california $2.5k tax incentive by not registering.

Not worth >$5000 just to get the car earlier

I don’t understand that. You wouldn’t be having someone else buy it. You’d behaving someone else act on yojr behalf to pick up your car that you are buying. How can Tesla possibly refuse to deal with someone’s legal representative?

Incredibly frustrating if that is Tesla’s position. They are completely inflexible with dates if you happen to be on vacation. And even if you do make provisions for someone else to act as your legal representative and pick the car up, thye fefuse go deal with that person.

What about when a business buys a car?

    What about celebrities?

    What about busy rich people?

There are a ton of scenarios where someone sends a legal representative to execute a transaction on their behalf.

Sorry for the stupid iPad typos. Should have read:

...they refuse to deal with that person...

Think you misunderstood. I don't doubt Tesla would allow for someone else to pick up the car. But I had the car originally for an east coast delivery. They couldn't ship it to the west coast without a rematch. To take delivery in the east coast would require registering it here, meaning I have to pay to register, pay to ship, pay to re-register in California, and also lose out on the california tax credit.

So having someone else pick it up (either here or California) would still cost way more than it's worth

I've bought cars out of state before. You get a temporary registration and you only pay tax in your home state once.

I think one worry was losing Ca tax rebate if it wasn't registered here as a new car - research needed

We recently shipped a car from NJ to Ca in a closed carrier, it was like $2k - I would have rather road tripped it but time was short..

Yeah, I apologize, I was conflating two issues. I know in your case the issue was changing delivery location across the country.

In other cases (for example, if you're on vacation and can't take delivery within one week of the random date they spring on you out of nowhere), my understanding is they have not been flexible on the date and have not allowed people to send a legal rep to take delivery. Sorry for going OT.

I have as well. Lived in Virginia, bought a VW GTI in New Jersey. The dealership in NJ simply registered the car in Virginia for me, printed out the temporary Virginia window registration, and I received the Virginia plates in the mail a couple weeks later. And the Virginia sales tax was just part of the paperwork, included in the financing, etc. Did not pay New Jersey sales tax. Really not an issue buying a car out of state. Most dealerships know how to process the registration and sales tax for your home state.

Buying a car a few hours drive away and one a few DAYS drive is a big difference. Yes it's possible but really not worth the hassle for the OP. I'm not sure why people are continuing to go down this rabit hole when he asked a simple question on rematching.
