From what I've seen, it looks like European cars for sale never bother to post the VIN # of the car for sale, especially big websites like Auto Scout. I wonder why they do that, since the first thing you do in the US is get the VIN and run a Carfax on it.

I've recently realized that CarFox reports have to be interpreted carefully. For my Roadster, CarFox shows a lot of incorrect info, including several owners. I bought the car from one of my best friends and he was the original owner. I think some of the errors might have to do with him moving to different states and re-registering/re-titling it in those states as me moved.

I also have a Lexus LS that CarFox says had a bunch of owners, but it really only had two. The other "owners" were dealers/brokers.

My mechanic accidentally added 60,000 miles to one of my cars on the Carfax database.

At least i Sweden Carfax is pretty much useless. Since i doesn’t include accidents, salvage title and so. And the Swedish register uses registration plate no if you want to search.

So not so useful knowing VIN here. Think it is the same i most of Europe. No big ”database” to find information in. If its a BMW you have to contact a BMW dealer to find out servicehistory an repairs.

There are also thinking regarding ”integrity” =not showing the VIN or registration plate. To make it harder to identify who the owner is and where the car most probably is parked.
