Tow company towed X without being in tow mode

Long story short. I had a flat tire. But I was in a hurry to work for a big presentation so I called an Uber and had a tow company come out and tow the car to the tire shop while I was at work. When I get to the tire shop, after the tire was replaced I get in my car to leave and to my surprise my car is SCREAMING at me. Regen breaking doesnt work, emergency braking doesnt work, cruise control, autopilot, hold breaking, none of it.

The only thing I can think of why this would happen is the guy towed my car without being in tow mode. In all honesty, I was so overwhelmed from work that I never told him it needs to be in tow mode but I would have thought they would have known how to tow a tesla (this was not through Tesla but through my insurance companies roadside assistance).

So before I call tesla about this, how bad is it? I'm kinda freaking out alil... Are my motors toast? And are there any repercussions by the tow company for not putting it in tow mode or is it basically my fault for not telling him?

Was it a flatbed? Even in tow mode, you can't go far.

Tow mode is only for pulling the car onto a flatbed. You cannot tow a Tesla with two wheels on the road. This will void your warranty.

If you didn't tow on a flatbed, you may be in trouble.

Depending how it was towed. If they dolley the vehicle it doesn't matter if it's in tow mode or not. Did you take any photos of how the vehicle was towed? I would ask the shop where the vehicle was at for their security camera. Just to see how it was towed. I am sure Tesla can pull the history on the computer also when it goes into the shop.

I wasn't there at the time of the tow I had to get to work so I'm not quite sure how it was towed and I don't have the direct number for the tow company because it was done through my insurance app. I will see if I can go check out the video footage tomorrow of the jack on the box it was sitting at

... Are my motors toast?...

I guess we'll have to find out from Service Center.

...are there any repercussions by the tow company for not putting it in tow mode...

Ideally, they are specialists so they should go through a crash course of which cars don't need a flatbed and which do. I suspect they just focus on as long as the car is towed.

...my fault for not telling him?

Tesla is still a rare breed so many are still not familiar with it.

It is prudent that owners need to remind the operator that the tow truck must be a flatbed kind for Tesla.

But you can try to hold the tow truck responsible for damages because they do carry their own insurance for these cases so they can be educated on how to handle a Tesla.

While we are waiting for the rest of the story, what is the difference between tow mode and neutral?
Tow mode is neutral while you're not buckled in the seat. Set neutral and get out, the car goes into park. Set tow mode and get out, you have 10-20 minutes (I forget the actual time) where the car stays in neutral.

It's important to point out that neither neutral nor tow mode disengages the wheels from the motors. It's not meant for long distance or high speed movement, just to winch it up onto a flatbed.

Hold down the scroll wheels while pressing the brake pedal.

It resets more of the modules than just holding the scroll wheels, might help the car forget whatever indignities were visited upon it.
Yes
I think the OP is getting way too worked up about this.
Also the tow operator should make an effort to educate himself before hooking up to a vehicle.

I would document what happened, probably tell the tow company and reset. I would expect a reset to make everything all good.

There was a broken down MS outside my office yesterday, so I had to go ask what happened. They had just bought it used two days ago and didn’t have a 240 volt outlet yet and the woman thought an overnight charge on a 120 volt outlet would be enough for her 80 mile commute. I was relieved it wasn’t a mechanical issue. Anyway the tow truck driver said he had never towed a Tesla before. Another good sign for my favorite company. He didn’t have a flatbed but was going to use a dolly and have all four wheels off the ground. FWIW, just my lame story of the day.

Good thing is that it was through your car insurance, so work out something with them or if you want to go all in then get them to pay for a brand new Raven!:D
