Heck, we don't even know yet if there is a software patch or a "tow mode". The manual hasn't been updated since last March, and still shows that Model Y has no tow options. If all goes well, I will be picking up my Model Y w/hitch tomorrow in Fremont, so maybe I'll have more info.
Yeah, I have a fear that it won't be installed. Either an "oops" or a "Oh, you set up a service call with mobile tech". Curious why we haven't seen any delivered Model Ys with hitch info yet.
There was a Blue Y in Canada on IG that got his car with a tow hitch, trying to remember the user name so i can post the pics here.
And now first deliveries have started. This is the factory 2” hitch receiver. (From Facebook, David Karpman)
I’m sure there is a loop to attach a safety chain, but it’s not visible in the previous photo. Because it’s recessed, I’d expect some rear fascia damage from the chain if your trailer ever jumped off the ball.
Yeah, it's pretty slick. There's also a 4 pin connector near the brake for brake controllers on large trailers. I'm only using it for bike/cargo racks for now. I really like that it hides away when not in use. The in-car manual has a long section about tow mode. The online manual hasn't updated yet. BTW, there's another long thread over in the Model Y ordering section.
Anyone try to request a service appointment to get the Tesla tow package added after delivery yet? I'd be interested to see how that process goes. Also, has anyone who installed the Eco hitch already asked Tesla if they can pay to unlock the trailer mode? Still doesn't seem like there is any mode which disabled the back sensors for things like a bike rack. Trailer mode seems to discourage using it unless your are pulling a trailer.
Ah so the chain loops are on the top. That's a first that I've seen. Depending on what TESLA charges for the module and config, I'll consider the aftermarket one.
For the OEM hitch: “just above the tube there is a bracket with a couple of openings that look like it's for a safety chain.” (From a FB comment). It sounds like the bracket is horizontal with holes on either side of the receiver. I’m sure we’ll get a good picture from someone shortly. Either way, with the right chain length, you can probably keep it from rubbing on the lower fascia during normal use.
To those with aftermarket hitches, it seems like owners of other Tesla models were able to request tow mode be added after installing aftermarket hitches on their vehicles. Has anyone attempted this with a TMY yet? I promise I searched but perhaps using the wrong terms. It looks like they just put in a service request and the update was pushed out to the vehicle. I’m handy so I plan to save some money and install an aftermarket hitch myself.
If I recall correctly they charged ~$700 to enable tow mode on the Model X. And I think they would only do it for people that installed a Tesla hitch themselves. (not an aftermarket one.)
