Zip ties...LOL......they could *fix* the problem by simply using an actual *switch* for the ignition - the way all cars used to be, like 5 years ago!

Yea, those never caused any problems...

Anyone can have a dramatic crash in any car for a number of reasons due to panic, lack of famiarity, whatever...

But the problem with the Prius and other push-button start vehicles is not the means by which the car is started or stopped, it's a problem with the driver. There are no less than 3-4 ways that the care could have been stopped/disabled, but you can't account for panic and ignorance in every case.

I should add...there are already 2 very adequate hooks for the OEM car mat..if the driver chooses to use them.

Toyota recalls 2.3 million cars in US over faulty accelerator pedal - Times Online

Toyota's once sparkling reputation for quality and reliability suffered another splintering blow after the iconic Japanese automaker announced a recall of 2.3 million vehicles in the United States.

The embarrassing move, which arises from safety concerns over a broad range of Toyota models, comes after an even bigger recall of 4.2 million cars last year and as the company battles hard to recover from its first full-year loss in 60 years.

For obvious safety reasons, no vehicle should rely on a software button to shut off the engine - there should always be a real physical cutoff switch.

Physical cut off or not the driver should know what to do in any situation, the guy being in officer , had time to call 911 but didnt think to put the car in neautral? No brakes are gonna work good at 120 mph for an extended period of time. Theres alot more to this gas pedal stuff than wat the news is telling you. a majority of the problems are the mats, and way people use them. Im a tech for toyota and have seen sevreal times where a vehicle has carpet mats with all weather mats stacked on top, and toyota isnt going to be the only one with this problem every one whos use fly by wire will experience this some how, the remeday for the gas pedal sticking on the mat is triming the pedal to make it shorter to reduce the chance of hitting the mats, And as far as sticking pedals theres 2 brands of ledals use in certain model year cars all japanese made camrys avalons etc have a nippon - denso pedal those are fine, the problems cars are the ones made in the us with a pedal from a company called cts, those we are installing diff plates and shims in,

Toyota knew of accelerator pedal problem in UK a year ago - Times Online

The scare is threatening to spread to Renault. It has emerged that nearly 100,000 Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1 models may be affected as they share parts with Toyota and now Renault has said that it is “monitoring the situation” since it shares the same Toyota pedal supplier, CTS Corp of the US, on some models.

...

Toyota in the UK, however, has admitted that it knew of failures in accelerator pedal mechanisms at least a year ago. A spokesman for the company said: “There were cases [of jamming pedals] that were looked at in the winter of 2008-09 and where parts were subsequently modified. Very few vehicles had been reported. The situation appeared to disappear and there were no cases in the spring and summer months. However, within a few days of this winter setting in, that was no longer the case.”
