Trade in X to Tesla for X when will I get estimate?

Tesla has a self evaluation process if you want to take advantage of it. You fill out the forms, take pictures of your car (they specify what they want), and you get a tentative offer. If you turn in the car in essentially that condition, with some constraint on the addition mileage (I think it's 500 miles), you get that as a credit.

I went that route, but was not particularly taken with their offer on my BMW. I took the BMW to the BMW dealer, who offered me more and bought it. That will be tougher with a Tesla as you don't have a dealer to compete against Tesla. But you will have a good idea what Tesla will give you and you can sell it yourself if you get a better offer.

Make sure its a much better offer though, because a trade usually reduced the sales price used to calculate the sales tax. So a trade in tends to be more powerful financially than selling for the same price elsewhere.

Don't forget to consider that the trade in value towards the new car also reduces the taxable amount on the new sale. I have heard some mention that Tesla offers are pretty lowball though, so don't expect to be amazed at what they offer.

bikeandsail... I just did what you are thinking about doing. I traded my 2016 Model X P90D in on a Model X P100D. The entire process was done over the phone since I was out of the country when I placed the order and live over 100 miles from the nearest service center. On the initial call, they gave me an estimate which wasn't great but I knew I would take a hit trading so quickly and having 20,000 miles on my trade. Regardless, they made it very easy and the estimate they gave me was the actual amount I received credit for in the end. Your delivery specialist will help with the process. The tax reduction on the transaction made the trade worth it. Of course I would have loved to have sold it myself for more but I don't regret the decision to upgrade one bit! The Model X P100D is, hands down, the best vehicle I have ever driven.
