Trailer hitch on 2021 refresh?

I got the chain plate. Not more four letter words and crawling on the ground connecting chains.

My chains used to be to short. Now they are to long.

Here is what I used on my Y. Worked really well and legal. It is a soft shackle.

In retrospect, the diameter I bought was likely overkill. So this time I went with 5/16" instead and a little longer. Much easier to work with. This is what I bought this time around.

You can twist the chain to take up the slack (Is this even legal though)
I’ll just shorten the chain.

Legal, who knows, don’t care. The whole receiver is not “attached to the vehicle” anyway.

The ball clamp is the weakest link. After that anything could fail, receiver pin, ball bearings (that lock receiver in), ball fall off. All similar risk.

I don’t plan to go on highways. Just to the local recycle center with brush and trash.

Just wondering, when you all are calling/contacting Tesla for the parts what are you specifically asking for? I noticed there are like 5 different parts on the receipt, can I just say I want a model x hitch and they'll know to include all that stuff automatically?
Some might, some might not.

My invoice has one duplicate part number that was already included with the hitch.

Bare minimum you need the hitch and the adapter.

Nuts and washers were not really needed.

Carrying case for adapter is optional.

Just discovered this thread, awesome!

I bought a lightweight track car (~1300 lbs) over the weekend and am considering using the Plaid to tow it to the track.

Any idea how heaving a trailer might be? The track car is only ~12 feet long, so I'm thinking a 15-18 foot trailer should do.

Just want to make sure I don't go over the 3,500-lb tow limit before diving in to this project ;)

Also, has anyone been able to figure out if there's a wiring harness on the refresh S?

I think I may have a solution for those that want/need trailer wiring on a 2021+. After spending hours with a product specialist from Tekonsha, it appears that their units cannot distinguish between the brake and signal wires in the rear light housings. As I noted in a previous post, both the wire for brake and signal carry current with either of those functions activated. Therefore it appears to be impossible to distinguish between a brake application and a signal.

I believe that a way (perhaps the only way) is to connect the Tekonsha 119250 unit to (i) center brake light wire from the top of the hatch (purple in my 2021+ application), (ii) running lights in either rear light fixture, and (iii) each signal to the indicator on each side repeater camera. The last step obviously will require running wire to the inside of each front fender, which will be a bit of a pain. This way, the brake and each of the turn signals are triggered by wires that are not shared for other functions. I haven't tried this (as I use my hitch right now for a bike rack only), but I suspect it will work.
