Check out TMC's Kevin Sharpe and I on this weeks Transport Evolved hosted by Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield (aminorjourney). Kevin outlines his charity to bring charging stations to the UK and I have a rant about MPG.
Not sure about the comment regarding 3 phase to get 240 volt. Almost all homes and businesses have 240V available.
Indeed, seems that each Chargepoint instal that I read about or use brings a 3-phase to deliver [email protected] plus [email protected]; not clear why though, why not just bring [email protected]? Perhaps it's because businesses get 3-phase but homes don't?
Yes, that is basically the reason in the US. Occasionally you do find a smaller business with 240V, but 208V from 3-phase seems more common at industrial locations. It was a chap by the name of Nikola Tesla, you may have heard of him He figured out that with the right layout these confounded generators & motors could be made much more efficient and easier to connect over long distances. Not everyone agreed at the time but it seems that he may have been right after all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-phase_electric_power Thing is, he also predicted that we would be able to supply the entire world with power, wirelessly, from giant antennas... which seems mad... or it did...
3-phase power is used in the roadster to drive the motor. Back to your original question; 3-phase is the native form of power that's delivered from the power stations to the grid. It's the standard used throughout the world, at different voltages and frequencies. The roadster charges on single phase AC, stores it in the battery as DC and turns it into 3-phase to drive the motor. You can obtain a single phase feed for the roadster from a 3-phase supply and, as that's more than likely found in business (per Teg) that's why we find ourselves charging from 3-phase. At the end of the day, we need DC in the batteries of Mr. Tesla's namesake car yet it was he who pioneered 3-phase for generation. All the debate about which is best, 3-phase charging or DC charging is more about where you put the 3-phase to DC rectifier than any technical merit between the two electrical standards.
Latest episode of Transport Evolved Lots of non-sense about super capacitors and the car of the year awards.
With respect, any chance we can get this discussion moved to another thread? Edit: MPT: Collected up the discussion on 3-wheel tech and moved here: http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/4772-3-wheeled-transport-evolved
Transport Evolved 28 This week; No Tax credit for Hyundai; Wheego Whip - Really? Hertz EV rental and an update on Coda.
The EV1 may have been this one: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/gm-ev-1-resurrected-hybrid-12468.html Show suggestions, critique of the Nissan cartoon was not informative or necessary, the program is long enough, and being distracted by Sarah Palin news during the show is, well, distracting, to both the viewer and your guest.
I have to say that I have largely stopped listening to/watching Transport Evolved. Why? Because the feed via iTunes is always corrupted in my experience. Typically 5-20 minutes into the show it jumps back and starts again at the beginning. This can happen up to a half dozen times (requiring fast forwarding over tens of minutes of material each time it does). This gets wearing. Listening in the car it gets potentially dangerous. With the video feed via iTunes (rarely used by me) I see the video and audio get stuck at some frame and then never restart. I have reported all of this to Nikki via [email protected], but never got an acknowledgement or saw any improvement. I thought mentioning it here might raise the priority. I really appreciate the hard work Nikki puts into originating content. It's a real shame to see the hard work spoiled by some glitch, bug, or fault whether in the production process or on iTunes.
Thanks Andrew, I'll take a look and talk to Nikki. I usually watch the YouTube version so haven't seen the problem.
