trunk lid lift supports

My trunk isn't lifting as far as it used to (I tried Viagra, but it didn't do anything). I tried Googling the part number, but didn't get very far either. It seems to be a stabilus part (see attached) but I can't find it on their web site (Gas Struts, Gas Springs, Dampers // Stabilus.com.)

Of course, I am also thinking, the're just struts.... can't I get them at the local parts store?

Any suggestions?

Have you tried this? It's what I usually do for struts.
Not yet... I was fishing for suggestions first to see what others have tried.

OK... update. I went to two different parts stores, and neither was able to help me. Encouragingly however, Discount Auto Parts actually had the Roadster in their database (but no alas, struts.)

It's starting to happen constantly! I'm sure "What's New" is to blame.

Pet peeve of mine - hatch falling on my head in winter. They always work worse in winter. This has happened on every car I've owned that's had those struts. The only variable has been how many years it lasted before dropping the hatch on my head. The only bright side with the Roadster is that (a) it has yet to do that, and (b) I rarely drive it in winter.

Not to derail the previous discussion, but aparently the only place to obtain these struts is directly from Tesla. Even the maufacter has no clue! They (struts in general) are built for specific purposes and they say the only place to get them is from Tesla. I could get a pair that have about 20% more pressure, but I'd be afraid of stressing the carbon fiber trunk lid.

I guess I'll just wait until the car goes in for its yearly maintenance and get them at that time.

I wouldn't worry about the 20% if you buy them and store them for a year. By then they'll have leaked about 10% out. Start using them in the winter when it's colder.

I found a source for the rear trunk struts, they are not cheap and it took two months to get them but they do work well and took about 20 minutes to replace, mostly because I did not know what I was doing. But my trunk now lifts well. It may have been cheaper to go to Tesla as I should have tried that first. So hopefully I am good for the next 8 years now.

Looks like the strut arms were $81.58 each and the trunk actuator was $24.42. By the way that trunk actuator Tesla sells is exactly the same as the ones I found on Amazon.com for $7.98 for a two pack.

wiztecy,
Can you provide any more specific info on the trunk actuator you bought on Amazon that works on your 1.5 ? (the hyperlink in your post just takes me to the Amazon.com generic homepage.) Thanks, compadre!

Sure, they went up in price. You can just search for "Actuator" on Amazon.com, its a best selling item :) They're now $9.55 for a two pack and its sold under Amazon Prime so free shipping for Prime members:

Amazon.com: InstallGear Universal Car Power Door Lock Actuators 12-Volt Motor (2 Pack): Automotive

You can get four of them for $13.85 which is a good idea, they seem to last about 6-7 years.

Did anyone try siraweb.com they carry Stabilus lifts of all sizes, including the Tesla hatch size. I'm trying to install slightly smaller lifts so that the hatch doesn't open so high and bang my garage door when it's open.

I just had my Roadster trunk struts replaced though the SC for $188.63 including tax with goodwill ranger installation. Tesla charges $81.58 per strut.

Here are some additional pics of the Stabilus parts of anyone is curious and wants to try to find a lower price:

As the professor would say, "Good news everyone!" I was able to procure the trunk lifts from Advance Auto Parts! They actually found them by looking up the year, model, etc...
I went into the store thinking I would have them order something close to the OEM and by trial and error find one that would fit. The guy behind the register said, let me look it up (to which I snickered and said something like "good luck with that!"). Lo and behold, they were there along with a bunch of other parts that weren't there the last time I was looking.

Here is the old and new, side by side (they are the same length (+- a few millimeters) but the sleeve is a little shorter (not a problem!). The holes and clips were identical to the original ones:

And the receipt (note they come with a limited lifetime replacement warranty!!!!):
