Trunk side rails

Can anyone tell me what the side rails in the trunk are used for? There are what look like two spring-loaded latch points on each side, and I’ve never been able to figure it out.

Looks like it's probably meant for a cargo cover / parcel shelf.

Thanks, I had figured there would be some sort of cover released but I guess not. I have the captains chairs in the 2nd row and it’d be nice to have the extra storage space.
