This table lists late-2021, early 2022 software version downloads. The intent is to help answer questions such as:
  • What software versions are currently available and what features do they contain?
  • What is the latest version available for your car?
  • Where are you in the sequential list of numeric software-downloads?
  • Why do you have or not have certain features?
Notes about software that appears stuck at a particular version have been moved here: What if Your Car is Seemingly "Frozen" at a Particular Software Version?

Update: The time has probably come to cease this effort. Tesla keeps putting out 'Production Builds' to various models and regions, and (more slowly, irregularly) 'FSD Test Builds' to the United States and, now, Canada.

I know that this exercise helped me to better understand how and why Tesla does what it does as far as car firmware updates. Of course I still have questions, but building the tables helped. Hopefully it helped you as well.

For those readers who still want to track or keep up on Tesla updates, I strongly recommend the following three sources:
  1. "not a tesla app" - Software Updates

  2. "Teslapedia" - TeslaScope Software Updates

  3. "TeslaFi" - Software Tracker
Using these three sources the interested reader can keep track of Tesla's (at times arguably complicated and/or bewildering) firmware update processes for the different models.

Fwiw, my non-fsd 3LR is at 2021.36.8 which doesn't match your diagram if I understand it correctly

Really? This is good information. So some questions for you and any others who find exceptions (or major contradictions):
  1. Model-year? (yours is Model 3. Year?)
  2. Refresh or non-refresh (especially for Models S and X.)
  3. Location? (USA for you. FYI: I used to teach secondary school near Pawling, NY., not far from Poughkeepsie.)
  4. FSD or non-FSD? (Non-FSD for you.)
  5. Do you always download new software versions when offered, or do you skip or delay any?
  6. Have you ever been in the FSD Beta program?
  7. If you can remember, what has been the recent sequence of software versions for you car? At least, what was your previous version?
If there are more contradictions, it may be that I misinterpreted the "pattern" I thought I saw in the not a tesla app dot com information. Perhaps things are not so conveniently linear and dichotomous (a single track that divides into two branches). If so, I will have to make changes.

*****

Just took another look at the not a tesla app info for Version 2021.36.8. That is the version with an out-of-sequence data that I had noticed. Perhaps it should be placed in the left-hand ("Production Build") column? I'll wait for more feedback before doing so.

Did you also have v36.5.8 (dated 11/12/21)? All the other right-hand-column software releases have an FSD version associated with them.

5 yes
6 no
7 sorry, not sure. I think it was 2021.32.5

Hmm. That would skip a couple of software versions (according to the chart). We can continue a conversation via pm, if necessary. Otherwise, let's just see if anyone else sees any similar conflicts. I'll advertise this Thread at a couple of other discussions.

For various reasons, software updates (via Tesla rollouts) have lately been perhaps even more hotly anticipated than normal. Folks are understandably interested in:
  • Full Self Driving (FSD) Beta testing,
  • Navigation way-points,
  • Compatibility with an anticipated CCS Combo 1 adapter (for North America),
and other desirable features. (Plus, who doesn't love getting new "presents" from Tesla--provided they work?)

Scattered throughout a number of TMC Forum threads are (a) questions as to why particular cars have/do not have particular features and (b) bits of helpful information from the knowledgeable. Some have pointed to various aftermarket websites (which sell smart-phone app subscriptions to enhance the Tesla experience) that are tracking the software version downloads of their clientele-database participants. But confusing to a newbie (to this issue) like me were the software versions and numbers themselves--why did some receive one software version and others an entirely different version? ("Was it something I said?")

Here is an attempt to map recent software version downloads. See if it helps answer such questions as:
  • Why does my car have a certain software version at a certain time?
  • Why do I have/not have certain features?

The two identified "branches" are not official--just my names for download tracks as explained to me by another TMC member (who I can identify if this chart proves to be a hit with the audience).

I chose to publish this in a new thread so that it can be corrected or revised as necessary.

I'm trying this as two screenshots (necessary to capture a readable version from an Excel spreadsheet). The two screenshots purposely overlap somewhat.

This portrayal may change if I find a better way to display the information. Another option is to generate a table within this Forum software--but that can be tedious for a large table, and the Forum software has far fewer internal features.
That was amazingly helpful ! Until now I had thought that my M3 2021.36.5.5 was way behind but now I can see that as a non-US owner with FSD, I’m exactly where I should be. Top marks👍😀

Thank you. Glad to be of help. I think that there are some things still to straighten out. But the exercise certainly helped me, and I can thank other TCM members for explaining things and pointing me in the right direction.

Update: I am beginning to think that "2021.36" updates listed in the right-hand "FSD Beta Testers" branch that do not have an FSD Beta version push included, should perhaps be moved over to the "Production Build" branch, or to their own third track? I'd be happy to hear from the knowledgeable about this.

Expect some significant revisions in the coming days.

I’m in the same spot as @Rtmpaul - August 2021 LR3, US, never skipped an update, no FSD beta, prior versions according to software notes were:

Updates to follow, below.
I’m confused that I’m still on 36.5.1 , FSD, beta tester and my daughter is on 40.6 without FSD. I called Tesla support and they said I was up to date? I don’t have sentry video new features or waypoints? How can I be up to date?

Same as Rtmpaul for me as well.

  1. Model-year? 2021 Model Y LR
  2. Location? New York
  3. FSD or non-FSD? Non-FSD
  4. Do you always download new software versions when offered, or do you skip or delay any? Yes, always downloaded when available.
  5. Have you ever been in the FSD Beta program? No
  6. If you can remember, what has been the recent sequence of software versions for you car? At least, what was your previous version?
    1. 2021.11.103 -> version car was delivered with
    2. 2021.36.5.5
    3. 2021.36.8

So if I understand correctly, you:
  • Are supposed to be an FSD Beta Tester, right?
  • Have 2021.36.5.1?
And your daughter:
  • Is not an FSD Beta Tester?
  • Has 2021.40.6?
Yes, that sounds confusing. First off, 2021.36.5.1 is not an FSD Beta testing version, afaik.

Did you ever have any of the FSD Beta versions (32.25, 36.5.2, 36.5.3, 36.8.5, 36.8.6, 36.8.7, 36.8.8)?

Based on your post and those of others, I definitely have to re-think the chart. I'm on it. Despite the chart's shortcomings, we do know that people on the Production Builds track(s) can potentially get up to 2021.40.6 and all the latest features (except not FSD Beta testing), while people on the true (whatever that is) FSD Beta-testing track(s) do not have any of the "40-" updates, so no waypoints and no updated "Additional Vehicle Information" pop-up. (My car is like that: FSD Beta but at 36.8.8 but with no waypoints or additional pop-up info.)

Do note that part of the missing features issue may have to do with the fact that new, refreshed vehicles (e.g., Models S & Y), have new hardware that older cars may not have. Nevertheless, there are still many questions.

I'll go back and study the updates again.

I’m in the same spot as @Rtmpaul - August 2021 LR3, US, never skipped an update, no FSD beta, prior versions according to software notes were:
2021.36.5
2021.36
2021.32.10
2021.32
2021.24
2021.12.25
2021.4.18.1
2021.4.12

So now you have "36.8," like Rtmpaul?

That strongly suggests that "36.8" and other non-FSD Beta downloads should not be in the "FSD Beta Tester track" on the right side.

Back to the drawing board.

Correct, I am on 36.8

OK. I have a new visual model that I will be uploading later this afternoon (Pacific Coast time). Clearly the sequences and targets of software releases are based on more complex variables than I have access to. Nonetheless, we can generate a partially accurate chart that captures some of what is going on and helps clear up some (not all) confusion. Coming soon.
