U.S. Model 3 to get CHAdeMO adapter soon

Suppose it depends on where you are traveling. If you go on Plugshare and look just for CHAdeMO charging stations there are definitely out there. But you do need to read the reports on availability and working order.

Not much yet in the way of SC where my mom lives that's convenient and there are a few CHAdeMOs listed around there. The Nissan dealerships however have broken ones that seem not to ever be fixed plus they restrict usage to their charging system to Nissan's only at least on the 2 I looked in on , a third didn't mention any restriction. With no CCS adapter the only other choice would be NEMA 14-50s at RV parks for a somewhat faster charge than a J-1772. So thankful I'm in California who has promoted EVs.

It says for new cars but not clear if that refers to older model S or all cars before a certain date? Software update needed?

All new models of the 3 cars have Supercharging turned on internally as you can be billed at the SC if you don't have free or limited supercharging on your car. Not all S/Xs were sold that way -- we happened to have bought during a time when Supercharging was included. Otherwise it needs to be enabled in those older vehicles to be able to take advantage of the faster charge rate. I wonder how Tesla would handle that.

Interestingly this is presently on the Model S CHAdeMO buy website:

Guess they haven't updated the text for the Model 3 in this section yet or someone jumped the gun that the Model 3 is now capable.

How bizarre. I click your link, and I see text that says it specifically doesn't work with the Model 3. I see your screenshot, and the text is different.

I had the page open in the browser that said it was compatible with the Model 3, but when I reloaded it, the language reverted back to saying it was not compatible. It seems like a premature deployment of a change to the website that was not announced officially yet.

A year ago I assumed I would eventually get the Chademo adapter. Now that for 90 seconds it looked like I had a chance... I was thinking... probably not for $450. The way CCS is playing out stateside and globally, I think I'll wait for that one.

Kudos to Tesla, I guess, for catching the error and fixing it in less than a half hour though.

Interesting. Now, to decide if I want to do that or wait for a CCS adapter.

I ordered one. It will be a very rare situation I need to use it, but I will enjoy having it just in case. Being able to charge on ChaDeMo will bring back memories of my Leaf ownership days!

If Tesla releases a CCS adapter, I’ll probably pick one up also. What an amazing competitive advantage it would be (for Tesla) to have a car that can fast charge on every major fast charger in existence.

The more options to charge up the better. It seems CCS quickly becoming the more common charging option by other manufacturers.

Agreed. Although with this move, there’s now probably more vehicles on the road in the US that are ChaDeMo compatible than CCS! Definitely agree that is not the long term trend though.

If you don't need it urgently I'd definitely wait. The CCS adapter will likely be a passive adapter and considerably less expensive than the Chademo (the European CCS adapter costs less than half of the Chademo one).

As I already ordered it, I sent Tesla an email asking them to clarify. What is strange is it is still showing under the Model 3 adapters section of the site even though the text indicates it is not compatible.

The description on Tesla’s site for the CHAdeMO adapter now says it works for the 3.

CHAdeMO Adapter

This adapter is specifically for the North American version Model S, Model X, and Model 3.

Funny, I *do* see it listed now here under Model 3 accessories, but my version of that page still says it doesn't work with Model 3 :)
(refreshed page, wiped cache)

This adapter is specifically for the North American version Model S and Model X. For Model S without Supercharging enabled, onboard hardware must be activated to use the CHAdeMO adapter

Note: CHAdeMO is not compatible with Model 3
Weird.

It's definitely reverted back to the old text. Maybe someone jumped the gun or did a copy of paste into the US page instead of the European page.

Maybe to support Chademo of Model 3 with the existing adapter will require some hardware update to the car, like a $500 option.

That would make it a $995 option, and would be pretty stupid.

IMO, it is in Tesla's best interest to encourage the use of every Chademo and CCS charger out there. It makes our cars more useful, if we can charge them more places, even if we have to pay higher usage charges for the availability. It also reduces the need for building more Tesla chargers - Let us take advantage of some of that Volkswagen money putting in new CCS chargers at Walmarts, Targets, and Sams Clubs everywhere.

And IMO, not having the Chademo adapter already available for Model 3, when it has been available for nearly 5 years for the S, is insane.

Fair disclosure : I have owned a Chademo adapter since they were first released, and while I have only used it a handful of times, it has truly saved my butt each of those times.

Yep - Electrek.co had an article about it too, then updated their article a little later to say the text about the Model 3 also being compatible was removed - and then the tesla website was specifically updated saying "not for Model 3" was put into the description. So either someone made a mistake or someone jumped the gun... time will tell. I know I did see it after someone tweeted (twought?) it.

While I was all excited I looked at Plugshare, and really the Chademo doesn't do anything for western Canada. Anything on the transCanada is "coming soon". Hey Elon, it's a race now - who installs first? To get to Minneapolis, you would have to go through eastern Minnesota near Duluth where apparently the Chademo chargers are out of service lately due to manufacturer defect.

Also, it seems anything that has Chademo seems to have CCS as well, so maybe that's a better option for an adapter anyway.
