Uber plans to buy up to 24,000 vehicles from Volvo to serve as a platform for its network of self-driving taxis.

Uber plans to use Volvo’s XC90 SUV equipped with self-driving technology developed by Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group.

It’s a nice win for Volvo, which has a three-year relationship with Uber. Automakers are increasingly looking to align themselves with both self-driving technology and ride-hailing services. Uber has also made deals with Ford and Daimler.

“The automotive industry is being disrupted by technology and Volvo Cars chooses to be an active part of that disruption,” Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo President and Chief Executive, said in a release. “Our aim is to be the supplier of choice for AD ride-sharing service providers globally. Today’s agreement with Uber is a primary example of that strategic direction.”

If Uber purchases the full 24,000 cars, Volvo could lay claim to powering largest autonomous fleet in the industry. Uber has been testing prototype Volvo cars with self-driving systems in Tempe, Arizona and Pittsburgh. A new Volvo XC90 retails for around $50,000.
