Unplugged Performance Pikes Peak Plaid (Plaid Peak) Testing - one interesting note

I was curious, so I looked a few things up and might as well share them:

Pikes Peak hill climb has been competed since 1916. It is the second oldest road race in America.
Screen Shot 2021-06-23 at 6.04.07 AM.png

The hill was dirt and gravel up to 2002, when the Sierra club sued the city of Colorado to pave it, as the gravel spewing from the edges of the road was affecting the environment below the mountain, and it took 10 years to finish paving it.

Pikes An EV has such as advantage at that altitude, compared to a normally aspirated gas pot. Given the 3% loss of power for every 1000 ft of elevation, a 1000 horsepower normally aspirated gas engine would make just 670 horsepower at the bottom of that climb and just 580 horsepower at the top.

Whereas the 1000 hp EV still has 1000 hp.

That is why they use turbochargers to get the oxygen loss back in the engine. With a modern turbo this loss can be compensated by cranking up the boost on the fly by turning the boost up while driving as the altitude increases.

Turbocharging At Elevation - Garrett Motion

This is not new, GE started to test this back in 1918! Hill Climb

Drivers will take on oxygen in their helmets to combat the mental fatigue from the altitudes effects, so they don't make a mistake memorizing the 156 turns.

The first race winner had a time of 20.55.6, and the current record holder is a VW I.D.R electric vehicle in 2018

Romain Dumas sets Pikes Peak Hill Climb record in 2018 Volkswagen I.D. R

good video of Peugeot rally driver Sebastian Loeb: The Pikes Peak Hill Climb - 100 Years

It is the last Sunday in June, which is June 27, 4 days from today! PPIHC Home - Fans - Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. now I have to figure out how to watch it in this CRTC restricted anti-motorsport country I live in.

I just stumbled across the video of yesterday's practice on YouTube and came back here to see if there's a thread. Even though I hate the way Tesla handled plaid+, I've got to admit the performance of the plaid on track looks amazing. Of course if I ever tried to explore that performance envelope I would die.

Looking at some times from yesterday, and noticed that a BMW M3 had a time of 4:06 in an open class, while the Plaid had a time of 4:14 in the unlimited class. Was a little disappointed, and surprised. Not knowing the difference between all the classes, thought I would look up this BMW. Well it is a purpose built race car, based on the 1996 E36 M3 shell, but HIGHLY modified, owned and driven by James Clay, owner of Bimmersport BMW parts business. It does not qualify for the timed attack class because of the extensive aero modifications. God knows what the estimated cost of this thing is, but here is what they have done to this car over the past 2 years. Wow.

Also noticed Romain Dumas, the guy with the fastest time at Pikes Peak in the VW, did a 3:56 in a Porsche 911 GT2RS Clubsport.

The base price of a 911 GT2RS is 203,000 Porsche 911 GT2 Tested

The 911 GT2 RS Clubsport has a base price of $478,000. This Pikes Peak car has extensive modifications on top of this. 24 hours of Le Mans winner Porsche factory driver Romain is at the wheel.

I would say the 4 door Tesla is in pretty good company. Not so disappointed with the time now.

Wow, watching the live stream on YouTube and the Tesla fanbois are absolutely insufferable Jesus it’s bad ICE is the Devil, Tesla gonna win the whole thing, etc . Tesla rules, your ICE sucks, etc Wow, no wonder people have such hatred toward Tesla owners. Come on guys, have some perspective. This is an absolutely historic race, look it up if you don’t know. The plaid isn’t going to be anywhere near the lead or challenging for the win. It’s cool that it’s there and doing well, and will only get better. But man, you’re the newcomer, show a little respect.

i bet half of the people commenting have no idea that an EV previously set the fastest time ever up the mountain Sheesh

Yes, it is supposed to be a race, a friendly competition between comparable classes, not an environmental debate. I bet most aren't even race fans. Too much "smug" in the air 🤢

Here's time: PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL HILL CLIMB
If I read that correctly Randy Pobstn win the Exhibition Class, but was 10th overall. Also last 1/3 of the section 3 was closed so time 6:57.220 is not comparable to the Volkswagen I.D. R's 7:57.148 (cls Unlimited).

They won their class with a car they got 2 weeks ago and only lightly (for pikes peak) modified. Almost no testing or refinement etc.

Did you expect it would beat custom built hill climb specialist race cars?

I just write up the results (I had no expectations, in either way)
