A while ago when Japanese became available on the UI I switched the car over to Japanese. As part of that change Google maps will display the English place names in katakana. Once you switch the UI back to English the names revert back to English. Well mostly...
One interesting bug that got created with this is just one layer of just one area near me has retained its place names in Japanese. It's only a single layer so if you zoom in or zoom out the places names return to English only. I had hoped that the new update and map update would clear it out, but no change.
