So now we have the details. The first stage performed correctly and would have landed perfectly except it had built up too much rotational spin on re-entry. There was probably not enough time for them to make a correction for this and it would have been averted if the craft had landing legs.

The second stage didn't relight though it was attempted. The computer shut it down due to conditions and "SpaceX has actually relit the Merlin engine in ground testing a dozen times in some cases and SpaceX is confident it can make the necessary adjustments before the next flight."

The results are that: SpaceX recovered portions of the stage and now, along with the Grasshopper tests, we believe we have all the pieces to achieve a full recovery of the boost stage.
